Boxed handstamp on blue legal-size cover with "On Her Majesty's Service, Post Office" to New Bedford Mass., red "London JA 20, 1863" circular datestamp at right, "New York Br. Pkt. Feb. 8" circular datestamp and "10" in circle due marking, Feb. 9 receiving datestamp, with enclosure which is cover salvaged from the wreck, both with some faults, Very Fine, the P & O Company's Colombo was wrecked in fog on her way from Point de Galle to Suez on November 19 of 1862, the passengers and animals made their way to shore where they were helped by the natives, an officer was sent to the mainland to signal for help which did not arrive until the 30th, so the passengers and crew had to establish their own community until help arrived (Image)

Folded letter datelined Liege, Belgium, May 13, 1863, to New York City, sender's blue oval handstamp, "Liege 11-S 13-5 63" circular datestamp, "Etats-Unis Par Ostende 14 Mai 8-9 II" backstamp with matching "AM. PACKET" straightline and ms. "7" due rate, the exact transatlantic sailing is uncertain, but Cal Hahn thought it was carried on the City of Baltimore, arriving in N.Y. on May 26, bold "36" depreciated currency handstamp applied on arrival (27c rate plus 9c premium for greenbacks), a bit fragile along folds, Very Fine (Image)
