1538° c ImagePHILIPPINES, 1864-74, 12-4/8c Blue, 12c Gray Lilac (23, 37, 48). Large margins, cancelled by oval handstamps, 12c tied by octagonal "Certif" handstamp on registered cover to Manila, sent from Mariana Islands, neat "Manila 28 SET 77" double-circle datestamp, missing top flap, defective at left

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST REPORTED DATE OF USE OF STAMPED AND REGISTERED MAIL FROM THE MARIANA ISLANDS. A GREAT RARITY.

During this period the Mariana Islands were postally administered by the Spanish Philippines. Mail between the islands was treated as internal mail. The "Certif" marking was applied on arrival in Manila. Four registered covers are known used on this same date. The franking on this cover is unusual, because it bears a combination of postal issues from both before and after the change of monetary units from centavos to centimos. The franking offered here correctly pays the single-weight registered letter rate for internal mail. (Image)
