Closing..Jun-12, 12:00 PM
522 E 15 image1879 Quetzal 1/4r black and green, well centered single with black Star cancel, used on petite 1880 local cover of Guatemala City, with well struck double line octagonal "Correos/Guatemala/Dec 3 1880" postmark, v.f. The 1/4 real value was designed specifically for local usages and post cards (Goodman knew of only one such cover which he illustrated and this cover is similar with identical postal markings. It is believed to be one of only five covers known with 1/4 real 1879 Quetzal) cat. $1250 (Cat No. 15) (Image)

SOLD for $525.00
Closing..Jun-12, 12:00 PM
523 E 17,19 image1881 Provisional surcharges, 1c on 1/4r and 10c on 1r tied by violet grid cancels, paying 11 cents (overpaid by 1 cent) on cover from Guatemala City to Portugal, with Dec.11, 1885 (apparently earliest use of CTD 24a postmark) departure datestamp alongside, arriving in Lisbon on 9 January, 1886, fine and extremely rare cover, one of only three known with 10c on 1r, stated to be only known cover with this combination and with 1c on 1/4r Quetzal provisional (Cat No. 17,19) (Image)

SOLD for $1,300.00
Closing..Jun-12, 12:00 PM
524 E 18 image1881 Provisional Issue, surcharged 5 Centavos on 1/2r green (Indian Woman), tied by blue grids on cover headed "J Rufino Barios" (President of Guatemala) and sent on 14 Sep 1881 from Guatemala City to Paris, red and magenta departure datestamps, fully intact Seal of the President on back, minor cover mending at top, fine, ex-Lange, with 1979 Royal certificate. The Centavos surcharged Provisionals on the entry of Guatemala into the UPU are surprisingly rare used on cover. Goodman lists a total of only four covers of all values, three of which are the 5c on 1/2r yellow green. All three of these covers are to England which is unusual as this is an underpayment of the ten centavos rate. The cover offered here is not listed by Goodman. The provisional 5c single foreign rate was only valid for 68 days (Aug 1- Oct 7, 1881) cat. $2000 (Cat No. 18) (Image)

SOLD for $1,500.00

533 E 23 image1881 The UPU Quetzal Issue, 5c Small Quetzal, tied to mourning cover to Antigua by "Diligencias/De/Vazquez-Ubico" company handstamp of the Vazquez-Ubico Stagecoach service, backflap missing and a few unnoticeable edge tears in the black border, still a v.f. cover and extremely rare usage (The Diligencias ran routes between towns in Guatemala as early as 1851. They carried mail as private carriers and eventually under contract with the Post Office. However in 1881 the Post Office decreed that the Diligencias could not operate outside of the Post Office and that all mail must have postage stamps attached, which were available at a 3 percent commission. Goodman notes that this must have persisted for only a very short time as only the 5c Small Quetzal is known with Diligencias cancels. The cover offered here is the better of only two known covers being one of the most significant Small Quetzal covers available), ex-Castillejo (Cat No. 23) (Image)

534 E 23 image1881 The UPU Quetzal Issue, 5c Small Quetzal, tied to mourning cover to Guatemala City by large "6" numeral in oval, supported by corresponding QUETZALTENANGO 17 Jan 1882 departure datestamp alongside (this datestamp was used from 1875 to 1882. It clearly deteriorated and as in the case of this cover, was serving the last few days in the postal service before being replaced by a new postmark in February 1882), fine and rare usage, one of only two known UPU Quetzal covers canceled with Large Numeral, also the earliest use of the 5 Cents value (Cat No. 23) (Image)

Closing..Jun-12, 12:00 PM
540 E 26 image1886 The Rail Bond Provisional Issue, 25c on 1p vermilion, single canceled by violet grids and properly used on registered cover from Guatemala City to Canada, with blue "Oficiana de Certificados/Guatemala/Apr 27 1886" oval below, boxed registry handstamp (numbers filled in by hand), also an apparently private purple "Por via Livingston" routing hs, with Boston transit and St. Johns and Halifax arrival pmks on back. Goodman lays out the case that this issue was more for philatelic purposes using the large remainder of Rail Bond stamps and that there was little postal demand for high denomination stamps, thus when they went on sale there was little demand and they were only in use for slightly less than four months and then withdrawn; the cover offered here is properly used in every way, paying the 10c UPU postal rate and the 15c registry fee, some toning, otherwise fine, one of only six covers reported (Cat No. 26) (Image)

SOLD for $525.00
