(After January 26, 1872 the 5c value was sold for 1/2 real (equal to six centavos) which was then the domestic letter rate. (Antigua is a small city surrounded by volcanoes in southern Guatemala. It's renowned for its Spanish colonial buildings, many of them restored following a 1773 earthquake that ended Antigua's 200-year reign as Guatemala's colonial capital) cat. $3000 (Cat No. 2) (Image)

512 E 3 image1871 10c blue, just tied by "1" duplex cancel on complete FL dated August 10, 1871, addressed to Lanman & Kemp in New York, with "N.Y. Steamship Aug 31 / 10" arrival below, corresponding departure and arrival docketing on back, filing fold and other defects through the stamp, additional franking (probably 2x1c ocher) missing, nevertheless fine appearing and possibly the earliest usage recorded of the 1871 Issue on cover (Goodman "Guatemala" illustrated the earliest cover dated October 10, 1871) ( Lanman & Kemp was a multi-generational family firm of wholesale druggists in New York City. Their records document the operations of the wholesale drug business in the years before the development of modern pharmaceuticals) cat. $3000 (Cat No. 3) (Image)

(In this period the 10 centavos adhesive was sold and valued at 1 real, which was the rate for a double rate internal domestic cover, or single rate to foreign destinations. 517 7 image1875 Liberty 1/4r black, fresh single tied by "Guatemala 12 Ag 76" cds on coverfront addressed to RETALHULEU (a city in south-western Guatemala. It is the departmental seat of Retalhuleu Department as well as the municipal seat of Retalhuleu Municipality), with oval merchant's cachet and red "Correos de Guatemala/Paquetes" alongside. (Goodman's listing on page 75, only one cover and two fronts recorded. At the issuance of the Liberty series the 1/4r rate was established for local covers and postcards (though single uses are known between towns) as well as the foreign periodical rate) (Cat No. 7) (Image)

Most of these are in multiple frankings or in combination with other values or issues. Only four covers are single frankings paying the internal domestic rate. Postage paid fees to Panama only, via Guatemala (May 7) and London (June 26), charged "T" and "130" (blue crayon) marks collected on arrival in Germany. A splendid and rare cover, ex-Lange (Goodman "Guatemala" I inventory #3, page 84).
