97 8 imageGreat Britain, 1841, 1d red brown (SG 8), "black plate" 10, block of six, SJ/TL, large margins to barely shaved at bottom corners, tied by bold Maltese Crosses on large folded cover from Montrose to Edinburgh, postmarked clear Montrose circular datestamps, 12 May & 13 May, 1843, on reverse, along with straightline "TOO LATE" (explaining the two different dates) and Edinburgh receiver the 13th; cosmetically refolded, Very Fine, 6d was the rate for a letter weighing 2-3 ounces.

A choice and very rare large multiple of a 1d red-brown printed form a plate originally used to print Penny Blacks. The Gibbons Queen Victoria Specialized Catalogue does not even price a used block of four off cover, never mind a block of six on cover.

Paid exchange office circular datestamp (12 Dec) also tie block to cover, Liverpool diamond, 24 Nov, at lower right, brown London cds23 Nov, on reverse; block with margins nearly all around but right stamps are creased where they were originally folded around the edge of the envelope (the right flap has been refolded for appearance's sake), otherwise Very Fine.

99 8 imageGreat Britain, 1841, 1d red brown (SG 8), block of 10, plate 76, DF/EJ, and single (check letters cut off) tied by Liverpool "466" barred ovals on folded Prices Current to New York, manuscript "paid late" at upper left, red U.S. "6" in circle struck once on block and once on cover; clear Liverpool circular datestamp, 17 May 1848, on reverse, along with a clear "Ship Letter/ Liverpool" crowned circle of the same date; the block, which has prominent re-entries at EH & EI, is just touching in a few spots, a small corner of contents missing with no affect on the markings, Very Fine.
