2106   image1814, bill for the use of blacks in Boston, early bill from Boston MA detailing charges for the hire of nine blacks at 15/each. Slavery had been abolished in Massachusetts in 1780. An interesting look at the hiring and charges of free blacks. Bill has erosion at bottom corners, Very Good to Fine.

2107   image1861, letter from a chaplain in General Banks Division, 1857, 3¢ dull red, type III (26), used with 1861 3¢ rose (65), on 1861 cover postmarked Dover N.H., Oct 17, to a "Chaplain, 2 Reg, Mas Vols, Gen Banks Div, via Washington D.C.", endorsed "to be forwarded"; includes original letter, in part, "I rather think both sides are rather afraid [to] do any thing, it would seem that our Government had much rather the soldiers would ketch a run away slave and send him back to slavery than to put down Rebellion…ketch a few slaves and pick a fuss with Fremont will be as much as the Administration will do…", Very Fine, a nice mixed issue franking.

The 1857 stamp was not valid for postage at this time, but since the franking included an 1861 stamp, the 1857 stamp was canceled anyway. The cancels are identical, though the 1857 stamp is barely tied to the 1861.
