Julia Reagan was the daughter of Brigadier General James H. Reagan of the Tenn. Militia. He was also the Postmaster of Facility Tenn. for over forty years. The town is now known as Reagan Station Tenn. The five stampless recorded examples of this patriotic design comprise four used from Corinth, Miss. and the example offered here from Germantown Tenn (currently a suburb of Memphis). This Propaganda design is reportedly one of three known examples and one of the rarest of all Confederate Patriotics. Throughout the war the Confederate government hoped to use international commerce to raise hard money and influence other nations to support the Southern cause. This rare slogan design promotes that effort. More effective, however, was the Federal blockade that isolated the Confederate States and disrupted regular trade routes. The "Ruby" made 8 successful trips, but ultimately was destroyed off Charleston Jun. 11, 1863.Lieutenant William L. Maury was commander of the "C.S.S. Georgia", a cruiser in the North and South Atlantic, capturing nine United States' merchant vessels. Estimate  $7,500 - 10,000. ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TRANS-MISSISSIPPI COVERS IN EXISTENCE. THE COMBINATION OF A BLOCK OF 4 PAYING THE 40¢ RATE TIED BY THE ARMY OF TENNESSEE DATE HANDSTAMP ON A TRANS-MISSISSIPPI COVER IS A UNIQUE USAGE. The Mississippi River and inland waterway routes were essential lifelines within the Confederacy. Early in the war, Federal naval strategy focused on control of the Mississippi, and, by the spring of 1862, key port cities were captured by Federal forces, giving them control of the river. With the Southern states divided between East and West, the Confederate government was forced to devise special measures to maintain transportation and communication along the trans-Mississippi routes. Surreptitious traffic across the river was carried on by private and government couriers, and the post office was authorized to appoint agents to ensure that the mail lines remained open. In April 1863 the Confederate Congress authorized a "preferred mail" across the Mississippi River and established a 50¢ rate per half-ounce. The act was revised to create an "express mail" without a fixed rate of postage, but instead limited to no more than a dollar per half ounce. By October 1863, Postmaster General Reagan secured a contract to have mail carried across the Mississippi at the rate of 40¢ per half ounce. Meridian and Brandon, Mississippi, were chosen as the eastern terminal points. Shreveport and Alexandria, Louisiana, were chosen as the western terminal points. (Image1)

The Letterman General Hospital was set-up on July 20 after the Battle of Gettysburg in an effort to consolidate the wounded and provide more effective treatment. Prior to that the wounded were scattered throughout dozens of field hospitals. The hospital was located in Camp Letterman, about one mile east of Gettysburg on the George Wolf farm. (Image1)

Howard in Baltimore, in the top right corner is a full impression of half dime coin which was formerly affixed to the cover to pay the Union postage on this cover from a prisoner of war, the cover was sent by Charles Howard to his wife, endorsed with manuscript "Exd" and "ExJ" Examiner's marking, minor edge wear and small part of flap torn away, Very Fine and rare. Estimate  $2,000 - 3,000. A SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL COVER FROM A POLITICAL PRISONER WITH ONE OF THE CLEAREST IMPRESSIONS OF AN ATTACHED COIN EVER SEEN ON A COVER. Charles Howard (1802-1869), a member of an old colonial Baltimore family, was President of the Baltimore Board of Police at the outbreak of the war. He was arrested by U.S. Military Authorities on suspicion of Confederate sympathies on 7/1/1861 and was held as a Prisoner of State (Political Prisoner) at Fort McHenry (Md.), Fort Lafayette (N.Y.) and finally Fort Warren (Mass.) until his release on 11/27/1862. His wife, Elizabeth Phoebe Key, was the daughter of Frances Scott Key. Charles Howard's son, Frances Key Howard (1826-1872) was likewise arrested and held as a Prisoner of State at the same locations and at the same time as his father. A second son, John Eager Howard, served the Confederacy as a Captain on the Confederate States General Staff. (Image1)

Estimate  $7,500 - 10,000. A REMARKABLE USE FROM HAWAII TO CONNECTICUT VIA MEXICO AND FLORIDA DURING THE MEXICAN WAR ROUTE DISRUPTION.ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE C. BREWER & CO. OVAL FORWARDERS HANDSTAMP. Cooke began this letter with the hope that a ship would arrive soon, bound for Mexico; on June 3rd he writes: "that a vessel sails for Mazatlan today at noon, so I must hurry…there has been an arrival of an English war steamer with two masts. She remained in our harbor eight days & was visited by large number of natives & foreigners. This mission & their children were invited & so were chiefs & scholars. To the natives & our children it was a novel sight. I think the time is not distant when we shall have steamers plying between this & other ports of the ocean & the two continents, America & Asia. The Sandwich Islands are becoming the centre of much influence & we hope that influence is growing better, as well as wider…The Congress, Commodore Stockton,is daily expected with a new commissioner, & a new consul. We hope they will do much better than the present incumbents, who are still doing what they can to destroy the Government & foment quarrels between it & the foreign residents. Mr. Brinsmade since his return has joined with them & I trust will soon get to the end of his rope. He has fallen from his former height & will fall still lower if he does not cease his opposition to Government. Other foreigners against their own good unite with Messr. Brown, Ladd, Hooper & Brinsmade, who have no business but to find fault with Govt. …My position brings me in close contact with the Govt. of these Is. & if I should continue in this school I may think it to be my duty to take the oath of allegiance, & become a subject of his Majesty. But in this, I shall make haste, slowly, for at present it appears a leap in the dark…" Peter Brinsdale had gone to Europe for the purpose of creating a joint stock company to take over the the proprieties & rights of Ladd & Co. of Hawaii. However, a contract with a Belgian company, also signed by Kamehameha III, ended in the ruination of Ladd & Co. and Brimsdale's humiliation;This cover, along two others (census no. 59 and 61), were carried by the French bark "Jeune France" from Honolulu departing Jun. 4th 1846 to Mazatlan. Forwarded in the Mexican post most likely by Messr. Mott, Talbot & Co. to Vera Cruz where marked Paid Aug. 13th and sent out to the blockading squadron probably by the British consul. Then sent by USS "Princeton" to Pensacola Fla. where entered the mails 10¢ due (no ship fee added because letters were entered by a U.S. naval ship). From Pensacola, the letters went north in the Great Northern Mail. This letter was carried by the American schooner "Restless", departing Honolulu on July 13th and arriving at San Francisco on August 9, 1854. A week later, the 3¢ pair was cancelled and sent on the mid-month sailing via Panama. It was then carried by the PMSC steamship "Oregon", departing San Francisco on August 16th and arriving at Panama City on August 30th after a stop at Acapulco. It was then carried by the "Empire City", departing Aspinwall on September 2nd and arriving at New York on September 12th. ONE OF ONLY TWO WITH THE HON US34 CDS. This cover was carried on the "Fanny Major" the departed Honolulu August 31, 1858 to San Francisco arriving Sep. 24th. From there it was carried on the PMSC "Golden Gate" that departed San Francisco Oct. 5th and arrived in Panama about Oct. 19th. After crossing the isthmus it was carried on the USMSC "Granada" that departed Aspinwall October 20th and arrived in New York on October 29th after a stop at Havana.The Gregory census lists 18 covers with the 5¢ on 13¢ surcharge, with only ten used with the 12¢ stamp. The 5¢ provisional surcharge was necessary due to a shortage of 5¢ stamps just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson. Most were made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark, around the start of 1857. Vancouver Island's five cent imperforate unused is one of British North America's rarest stamps. In 1865 De La Rue sent five and ten stamps to Victoria. An undetermined number of sheets of each value were sent without perforations and so were issued in that state. A census of satisfactory four margin unused copies of the five cents follows:1.Vertical pair, lot 24 Harmers New York Dale-Lichtenstein sale of May 11, 2004, described as full original gum - realized $115,000. This was the only BC&VI item illustrated in Life Magazine's May 3, 1954 "World's Rarest Stamps" article.2. SG No. 15. Scott No. 15  $35,000. A GREAT BRITISH NORTH AMERICA RARITY - ONE OF THE FINEST MINT EXAMPLES OF THE 1860 1 SHILLING ORANGE VERMILION ISSUE IN EXISTENCE. The unused one shilling orange-vermilion of Newfoundland (1,000 issued) is possibly the rarest classic imperforate stamp of British North America. A census compiled from a study of auction catalogs finds no unused multiples and only three satisfactory four margin copies with good color. These are:1. ex-Dale-Lichtenstein (H.R. Harmer Nov 18-21, sale 1968, lot 654) three large margins with smaller margin at left. Later appeared in Dallas and Ballie collection where described as "clear to large margins, exceptional color, slight creasing, part O.G.", realizing $48,300 in 2006.2. This example, first appearing as lot 579 at the 7th Ferrary sale of June 18-20, 1924, later appeared in the Moody, Lilly, Cartier and Schneider collections.3.The four margin example in the Pratt sale (Harmers London October of 1986, lot 157) which later appeared in Harmer's N.Y. Gilbert sale on October 2004.The Pratt book states "Most of the 1/ (orange-vermilion) stamps that have appeared on the market are dispirited looking and lacking good color." Two four-margin copies fitting that description have been seen. The second Dale-Lichtenstein copy (lot 55 in January 26, 1970 sale) was returned and reappeared in the clean-up sale of July 1, 1971 with an RPSL certificate stating "badly soiled and treated". This stamp was later sold (without certificate) in Christies Robson Lowe's Weill Bros. stock sale of November 22, 1987. A very similar four margin copy with the same weak color sold as lot 129 in Siegel's Clifford Cole sale of March 17, 1988 and later appeared as lot 314 in Spink-Shreve's November 19, 2009 William Gross sale. In both these sales the stamp was described as being of good color, but the color is much duller than examples 1-3 above. (Image1)

Graded certificate (XF-Sup 95). SG No. 513a. Scott No. 387a  $10,000. ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 1959 5¢ ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY ISSUE WITH CENTER INVERTED. The stamps, issued on June 26, 1959, coincided with the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway by Queen Elizabeth II and President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The planning and production of the stamps to commemorate the event took almost as long as the construction of the Seaway itself with proposals coming forward in 1954 in the US and in 1956 in Canada. The first report of the discovery of the Seaway Inverts was when a young office boy from the Marlborough Hotel in Winnipeg purchased 30 stamps from a Post Office outlet in the Eaton store on August 20, 1959. It is believed that approximately 200 examples exist today. (Image1)

With only 16 examples recorded on cover, it would seem even a used example would be far rarer than mint however catalog values seem to indicate to the contrary.
