1473 O   imageAntique Collection of Worldwide Classic Used Stamps in a Grimme & Trömel Album Printed 1880, with roughly 1,500 stamps, ranging from 1840 to 1878. The strength of the collection is in European countries, with particular attention to Germany and States (roughly 500 stamps), Switzerland including Zurich with Scott #s 1L2, 1L4 (x2) and 7, Italy and States (with better representation from Two Sicilies, Roman States and Sardinia), Spain, along with Japan, Nordic countries, Great Britain (including Commonwealth countries), United States, and others. A spot check of the collection revealed many stamps cataloguing in the $100 to $500 range, with many others cataloguing $1,000 and up, so the collection's total catalogue value would be huge. Another highlight is the wealth of postmark types including numeral and town cancels that will benefit from further study. Our several online photos show a sampling of this collection. Since this was assembled in the 19th century, the stamps were affixed to the album pages with either home made paper hinges, or a spot of adhesive on the upper portion of the stamp. We dipped one lower valued stamp in hot water and the glue dissolved, resulting in a sound stamp. A few stamps that had fallen off the pages were mounted in modern mounts or hinges by descendants of this pioneer collector. We recommend in-person viewing to better appreciate the depth of this awesome and valuable material, as well as the quality, as there are several faults. An ideal collection for the right person who will want to spend a little time on conservation, as the benefits should greatly outweigh the time investment.
