commanded the First Tasmanian Contingent and was promoted to Major in Dec 1899. He was a POW before escaping and was wounded twice in action. He received the Queen's Medal with three clasps and in 1902 became an aide to the Governor-General of

addressed to "Capt AJ Bessel-Browne / Fifth West Australian Contingent / Capetown South Africa", franked with W Australia 1d tied by SHIP MAIL ROOM PERTH WA FE 13 02 duplex, hexagonal "T 15" due marking, no backstamps or receiving cancels, roughly
opened at top with some sealed edge breaks (into due marking and cancel), still Fine and a rare piece of incoming mail to soldier; the due marking applied in error as the Imperial penny postage rate was satisfied with the W Australian stamp.rnCapt
Browne rapidly advanced through the ranks, starting in the First Contingent volunteering as a private then becoming a Lance-Corp. Nov 1899; Corp. Feb 1900; Sgt. March 1900; Lieut. April 1900; then second in command of the Fifth Contingent before
promotion to Capt. in June 1901. He received the Queen's Medal and 4 clasps. He saw distinguished service in WW I, even serving as commander (if only for a week) of an American artillery division. He retired in 1942 as a brigadier general commanding
