SP 5 00 squared circle postmark, circular "1d TO PAY / DOUBLE DEFICIENT POSTAGE" handstamp, New Zealand 1d Due affixed and cancelled at Ellerslie 8 OC 00, backstamped Wellington OCT 9 flag cancel, Auckland 12 OC, Ellerslie 12 OC, cover with couple sealed edge breaks and portion of backflap missing, FinernThe "4th NZRR" from the Fourth Contingent, a citizen-sponsored contingent, were sometimes referred to as "Rough Riders" as they tended to be good marksmen and riders and taking their moniker after Teddy Roosevelt's men from the recent Spanish-American conflict. NZ History Archives reveals service number "1406" to be a George R Wilkinson of Ellerslie of the Fourth Contingent and next of kin to be "Mr G Wilkinson", so presumably this would be a letter to his father. He was also a member of the Ninth Contingent which sailed 19 March 1902, about 10 weeks before the war's end. He was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal (Cape Colony, Rhodesia, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902 clasps) While not fighting in South Africa, he played on a New Zealand rugby team against army teams from other countries which included Australia, England and Canada. His New Zealand team won the "league" and was presented with the Zeerust Trophy, on which his name was inscribed and is currently on display at the National Rugby Museum. (Image 2) (Image1) 150-200

Polson, Capt / 5th NZ Regt. 1" at lower left, backstamped Wellington May 2 flag cancel, Napier 3 MY, Spit 3 MY, open at top and partially at bottom, small edge break at right, Fine. rn"Trooper 2692" is Priv LJ McKechnie, one of the reserves and later full member for the NZ Mounted Rifles sailing with the Fifth. He died of enteric (typhoid) fever while in service on 23 July 1901. Capt (later Major) Polson served as an officer in the 5th and 8th Contingents and in WW I. (Image 2) (Image1) 200-250

Smith / Auckland Section / Seventh Contingent / N.Z.M.R.", fair strike of "MILITARY POST OFFICE, NEWTOWN PARK N.Z. / FREE" handstamp, backside with a return address partially covered by backflap reading "Mr. Herbert W Smith / c/o Mr R Green / 35 Mansfield St / Newtown / Sth Hellington" with no other transit or arrival cancels, cover light central vertical fold and some trivial age spots, Very Fine cover sent from a training camp near Wellington to active duty soldier. The marking was used for only 6-7 weeks and few covers are known. rnThe Seventh Contingent was intended to replace the Fourth and arrived in South Africa in May 1901. Its first clash with the Boers came within 12 days. Much of the time the unit was used with some success in dawn raids on Boer laagers. The tactic sharply reduced the morale of the Boers so that by late 1900 only a few thousand of the most determined and effective fighters remained on the battlefield. (Image1) 300-400

Unlike other contingents, men were not required to be members of the Volunteer Force and more than 4000 men applied but only 1000 were selected. The North Island Regiment departed from Auckland aboard the SS Surrey while the South Island Regiment left from Lyttelton on the SS Cornwall. Both ships arrived in Durban on 15 March 1902. Perth WA FE 24 and Edinburgh MR 24, some trivial edge wear and small break at upper left edge, Fine and rare contingent mail sent during a layover in Western Australia with only a few examples knownrnThe recipient, a New Zealander, was one of the secretaries of the Australasian Club which provided accommodation for Australian and NZ medical students at the University, and the sender most likely a Lt. 3341 imageNEW ZEALAND-Ninth Contingent; 1902 Unfranked Cover From Dunedin Training Camp, envelope with printed cc of "New Zealand Ninth Contingent / Forbury Camp, Dunedin" with coat of arms, South Dunedin 21 FE 02 cds and nice strike of the "MILITARY POST OFFICE, FORBURY, N.Z. / FREE" handstamp (known used 11 Feb-12 Mar 1902), tiny portion of a backstamp, cover some minor faults, still Fine cover mailed prior to embarkation, such covers being accorded privilege of free service.rnFormed in March 1902, the Ninth Contingent was made up of men who had not been accepted into the Eighth and was also divided into two regiments: the South Island Regiment sailed from Port Chalmers aboard the SS Kent, while the North Island Regiment sailed from Auckland on the SS Devon. One of its members, Lt. Robert McKeich, was the last New Zealander to be killed in combat after being shot during a confrontation with three Boers four days after the official surrender. Webster / No. 8505 / North Island Battalion / 10th New Zealand Contingent / South Africa", light strike of boxed "Returned to New Zealand from South Africa" handstamp and postmarked Wellington 6 OC on return, ms "c/o AL Webster Greytown North Wgton" at top, bit irregular at upper left corner with some small sealed breaks, still Fine and an elusive marking. rnCpl. Webster's service number was actually "7505", AL Webster was his father. rnThe Tenth Contingent was formed as a response to the defeat suffered by British forces at Tweebosch on 7 March 1902 and, as in other contingents, was divided into two regiments: the North Island Regiment departed from Wellington aboard the SS Drayton Grange, while the South Island Regiment left Lyttelton on the SS Norfolk. Both regiments arrived in South Africa in late May and were at Newcastle in Natal when the war ended on 31 May. They sailed home in July. (Image1) 100-150

Adjutant", Rhodesia 1d tied by cds partially obscured by the New Zealand "FOUND OPEN / OFFICIALLY SEALED" label affixed in Auckland and tied by a 13 SP 00 Registered cds, circled "R" handstamp, backstamped Bulawayo 5 Aug,, Auckland 13 SP and Wellington 15 SP, cover bit worse for wear with edge wear and light bends, still Fine use, apparently the registered letter was accepted with payment of additional postage. rnA unit of the Third and Fourth Contingents, the members of the "Rough Riders" were selected from 2,000 picked riders and shots, all unmarried men, many representing the oldest families in New Zealand.
