Because of citizen complaints about delays in mail delivery caused by yellow fever fumigation at Way Cross, Georgia, mail heading west was also disinfected at Flomaton, Alabama. This envelope is one of very few known covers that was disinfected at Flomaton, where it was struck with a paddle studded with nails, producing rows of puctures in the envelope, and fumigated by burning sulfur, Very Fine. 5023 c   image213, Jacksonville, Fla,Oct 21 1888 postmark ties 2c stamp to envelope, Sent from the offices of the Board of Health at Jacksonville, Florida, to New York, disinfected at LaVilla Junction, located outside Jacksonville. In early August 1888, the U.S. Surgeon General ordered that quanartine be enforced because of an outbreak of yellow fever in the Jacksonville area, and all mail leaving the Jacksonville area was fumigated. The envelope was struck with a paddle studded with nails, producing rows of puctures in the envelope, and was fumigated by burning sulfur, Very Fine. (Image 1) 350-450

5031 c   imageCuba #222A, Savannah GA,Apr 21 ,1899 flag cancel ties 2c overprinted Cuban stamp to envelope, ,Soldier&rsquo,s letter written at Savannah, Georgia on 18 April, while onboard the troop transport Thomas while undergoing quarantine near the mouth of the Savannah River, the soldier, G. W. Wood, having just returned from Cuba after participating in the Spanish-American War, writes &ldquo,we expect to spend the next five or ten days in quarantine&rdquo,. Letters from Cuba arriving at southern U.S. ports were disinfected in 1899 for yellow fever, letters were also disinfected at Santiago, Cuba, prior to forwarding to the United States, the Cuban postage on the cover was not accepted by the U.S. post office at Ypsilanti, Michigan, and charged two cents postage due. During the Spanish-American War, over 5,000 soldiers died of yellow fever in Cuba. Only 968 died in combat, Very Fine. , (Image 1) 200-250

The covers in this correspondence to Providence, Rhode Island were used from 18 October to 14 November 1899, this being the latest recorded example, U.S. troops returning from combat duty in Cuba during the Spanish American War were often transported to Key West due to its proximity to Cuba, many U.S. troops contracted yellow fever while in Cuba, and the U.S. Public Health Service disinfected letters leaving several southern U.S. ports because of yellow fever, Very Fine. , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , (Image 1) 250-300

During the great Spanish Influenza Pandemic of 1917-19, over 25 million deaths occurred worldwide. In the U.S. thousands died, including many soldiers in military camps, and disinfection of mail was enforced. The rare marking used on this card "FUMIGATED W.E.S. / ASSISTANT SURGEON 3rd ORE. INF. / Clackamas", also included in this lot are two ppc's, sent by soldiers in military camps, one from Cape Cottage, Maine, the soldier writes &ldquo,We are in quarantine for a few days.&rdquo,, the other from Camp Vail, NJ, used , 3 Nov 1918, the soldier writes &ldquo,The quarantine was raised from our camp yesterday&rdquo,, strike ,loisted above ,is the only known example, Very Fine. , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , (Image 1) 300-350

The writer states &ldquo,Well I&rsquo,m over the measles&rdquo,. The "STERILIZED" handstamp is only known example from this facility in the 1918-1920 period.
