Letter rated as an incoming ship letter with Philadelphia &ldquo,6&rdquo, cents circular marking, and collected on arrival. Marking introduced in 1799. (The "Lazaretto" Quarantine Station was commissioned and built by Philadelphia's board of health in 1799 and was on the Delaware River in Tinicum Township, Delaware County.), Very Fine. This Type 2 QUARANTINE marking, measures 44 x 3 1/2mm and underlined and has a stop at the end. It is recorded from 14 July 1829 to 5 June 1831. Red SHIP / 6 ship letter handstamp applied on arrival. Although these Quarantine markings were not used to denote disinfection, the health authorities at Boston disinfected mail and other cargo that was detained in quarantine, Very Fine.

MacDonald in the Spring 1832, to her brother, Dr. James MacDonald, who was vacationing in Europe. Written at New York City on 10 May, and posted from Havre, France on 3 June, she writes of her concern for her brother, because she has read in the newspapers of the invasion of Paris by the Cholera, and the number of cases are much more than those currently in London. This letter contains unusual chisel slits and punctures in a star-shaped circular pattern, which are only known from this naval installation. , Sent by Captain P.F. Voorhees of the John Adams, this letter was included in a diplomatic pouch that was sent to Commodore Daniel T. 5018 c   imageNew Orleans, LA,Sep 3 (1878) postmark ,ties 3c Green stamp to envelope, addressed ,Winchester, Virginia, disinfected before leaving New Orleans because of a yellow fever epidemic. A nail-studded paddle pierced the envelope, producing two rows of punctures, and the contents fumigated with a sulfur solution. The letter and newspaper clipping that was enclosed in the letter also contains punctures. The writer states "The fever is increasing on account of the weather - the nights are very cool, and the days are warm and rainy. All of which conduces to increase the death roll."As of 2 Sep 1878, there were 6,909 reported cases and 1,091 deaths from yellow fever. Only a couple covers are recorded from this epidemic, which also devastated Memphis, Tennessee. Covers with original letters are very rare, Very Fine. , , (Image 1) 500-750
