567 c   Union military correspondence collection, twelve different letters collected for their interesting content, all with original covers, three with stamps removed, includes one long January 27, 1865 letter written by a deserter on both sides of eight sheets with the letterhead of the "Office of the United States Express Company.", he details his escape to Canada, thoughts of suicide, his resettlement in Illinois and the reasons for fleeing, certainly a unique account by a conscientious objector, also three military documents relating to John C. Gordon, Surgeon in the 28th Regiment of the Michigan Infantry, includes his mustering in on November 5, 1862, his mustering out on February 13, 1863 a notarized voucher to the State of Michigan for compensation of $575.02 for his services with two servants, overall fine-very fine and lovely original historical documents of the Civil War Est. $400-500

A, watermark inverted, an incredibly rare used example with portion of "Wagga Wagga/?7 JL 28" c.d.s, fine centering; there are believed to be only about a half dozen used examples of this variety recorded, prior to 1972 there were no others making this a great rarity, at that time and after at least three mint sheets of the watermark inverted entered the market making it much more available in mint condition, however the used examples retained their miniscule quantity making it a major rarity in used condition (Scott #72 var.). 581 nhbl ACSC #190 imageACSC #190, 3p Greyish blue, Die I "White Wattles", block of four, fresh, o.g., never hinged, fine-very fine; this variety comes from the earliest printings of the copper plates, the first ink used had a tendency to be removed by wiping the plate from the fine lines of the design giving it a more washed out appearance especially in the ornaments at each side of the head (wattles), the ink was immediately changed making this variety quite scarce (Scott #170 var.).
