1523 c AAMC #1146 ImageAAMC #1146, July 28, 1931 Round the World Flight by Herndon and Pangborn, cover franked with U.S. 2c Washington tied by July 28 Brooklyn c.d.s. in which the plane "Miss Veedol" took off from Floyd Bennett Field, arriving at Croydon on July 31 with corresponding c.d.s., from there it went via Russia with violet cachet and black c.d.s. on reverse, headed to Sabishiro Beach where a Japan 3s stamp was affixed and cancelled October 2, then onwards to its ultimate destination at Wenatchee, Washington where it received a U.S. 2c stamp cancelled on October 5, violet handstamp numbering this as 68 of the 75 letters carried, signed Hugh Herndon and Clyde Pangborn, some inconsequential tone spots, still very fine; while attempting to beat the round the world flight record, they were inadvertently arrested and detained in Japan and were heavily fined by the Japanese Government for flying over fortifications, thus only completing the first non-stop flight from Japan to the United States. 1524 c AAMC #1162 ImageAAMC #1162, April 14, 1932 Attempted Round the World Flight by Junkers D-1925 "Atlantis", two India 1a and 3pi stamps tied by Rangoon double circle c.d.s. to cover addressed to Calcutta, proper "Round the World Flight/By German Seaplane" seal tied by purple "Atlantis, Junkers D-1925/Ichapur 14 April 1932" cancel with an additional strike on reverse and blue "Bertram Atlantis Expedition" handstamp to left, Calcutta arrival c.d.s. on reverse along with being signed by Stephen H. Smith, one of the few covers known signed by him, very fine; it's believed only 75 covers exist from this flight; Captain Hans Bertram accompanied by his team attempted a round the world flight from Kiel, Germany but ultimately were forced down in the Indian Ocean after arriving safely in India. 1525 c AAMC #1167 ImageAAMC #1167, July 5, 1932 Round the World Flight by Mattern and Griffin, cover with U.S. 5c Airmail tied by New York slogan c.d.s. to New York, plane took off from Floyd Bennett Field going via Harbour Grace and landing in Berlin where it received a Germany 4pf stamp tied by a Berlin July 6 c.d.s., from there to Moscow where it received a 15k stamp tied by a Moscow July 7 c.d.s., their journey ended on their trip to Siberia, cover is also signed by Jimmy Mattern and Lt. Griffin, light toning bands from envelope seal adhesive which is typically seen on these, still very fine; an incredibly scarce piece of flight history as a mere 10 covers are believed to have been aboard. 1530 c AAMC #1177 ImageAAMC #1177, June 3, 1933 Attempted Round the World Solo Flight by Jimmy Mattern, cover with U.S. 8c Airmail tied by New York G.P.O. duplex c.d.s. addressed to himself at Hotel New Yorker, his first leg was a non-stop flight to Jomfruland, Norway in which a corresponding June 4 c.d.s. was applied, then onwards to Moscow where two Russian 15k and 5k stamps were applied and cancelled with a Moscow June 5 c.d.s. with arrival c.d.s. on reverse, his next leg took him over Siberia where he was lost and unable to communicate until Russian pilot Levanefsky rescued him and carried him on a plane to Nome, Alaska where an arrival c.d.s. was applied, he secured another plane to then travel to Fairbanks (July 23 c.d.s.), Juneau (July 25 c.d.s.) and Edmonton (July 27 c.d.s.) with all c.d.s. applied on reverse until he arrived back in New York, a U.S. 3c stamp was placed on reverse, cover is signed by Jimmy Mattern at top, Russian stamps with minor insignificant pulled perfs, very fine usage; very few covers are known to exist that have travelled the remarkable entire flight. 1531 c AAMC #1183 ImageAAMC #1183, July 15, 1933 Round the World Solo Flight by Wiley Post, legal sized cover with "A. Wittnauer Co. Watches" corner card franked by U.S. 8c Airmail stamp tied by New York G.P.O. c.d.s. to A. Wittnauer Co. of New York, the flight in his plane "Winnie Mae" went from New York-Berlin-Moscow-Irkutsk-Rukhlova-Khabarovsk-Flat (Alaska)-Fairbanks-Edmonton-New York, another U.S. 8c Airmail stamp was applied and cancelled by New York G.P.O. on August 3, cover signed by Wiley Post with correct light informational handstamps in violet, light overall toning and fingerprint markings on reverse, still very fine; signed Kessler; it is believed that very few covers accompanied Post on this flight which was successful in creating a new record for flying solo around the world (15,596 miles in 7 days, 18 hours, and 49½ minutes) which went unbeaten for five years. 1532 c AAMC #1215 ImageAAMC #1215, September 9, 1934 Round the World Flight by Light, registered cover franked by five Iceland stamps, 10a (2), 20a, 50a and 2k, tied by two Reykjavik c.d.s. cancels addressed to Lorch, Germany, this cover carried on Dr. Richard Light's Iceland to Edinburgh leg which is the only leg which carried mail, Edinburgh and Lorch arrival c.d.s. on reverse, 20a has light surface scrape otherwise very fine. 1533 c   Image1937 Around the World Flight by Earhart and Noonan, specially designed cacheted cover for Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan's flight, this being their first attempt which took off from Oakland on March 17 in an attempt to fly around the world following the equator, while attempting to take off at Luke Field in Hawaii, both landing gears collapsed and the attempt was cancelled, this particular cover is cancelled twice by Oakland wavy c.d.s. dating March 11 on front, twice on reverse dating March 14 and once again on reverse dating March 17, cover is wrinkled and creased in some places, otherwise fine; an intriguing piece of Earhart history. 1534 c AAMC #1307 ImageAAMC #1307, 1938 Howard Hughes Record Flight Around the World, specially prepared legal size air mail cover (as all are) mailed from New York on July 10th with #C23 tied by duplex postmark, flown to France where that country's 85c air mail stamp was affixed and cancelled on the 11th, then on to Russia where a 40K precancelled adhesive was added, then on to Fairbanks, Alaska, Minneapolis and back to New York, where a #C19 was affixed and cancelled by a July 14th duplex upon his arrival, appropriate flight cachet and handstamps of various cities in route, quite scarce as a flight cover as these were only given to people connected with the flight, however unlike most others this one is also autographed by Howard Hughes, Dick Stoddart, Harry Connor and Edward Lund, clean and extremely fine; quite rare as Howard Hughes signed very few. Okinawa, LPH-3/AUG 7, 1971" c.d.s. to flown cover carried by Alfred M. Worden, oval "Launch/July 26" cancel ties sticker cachet to cover, signed by each of the astronauts David R. Scott, Alfred M. Worden and James B. Irwin, backstamped "Recovery/AUG. 7-1971" on reverse in red, NASA serial no. 353 under backflap, an extremely fine cover and a remarkable usage; this cover was flown on Apollo 15 where #1435b was then added on the U.S.S. Okinawa, the recovery ship and cancelled on board, the cover was later signed shortly thereafter on their flight home from Hawaii to Houston. (Image) Est. $2,000-3,000
