SPECIAL DELIVERIES
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1311 nhu E4 Image#E4, 10c Blue, mathematically precise centering within exceedingly large margins, deep prooflike color and impression on immaculate white paper, unblemished o.g., n.h., a superb gem.

The stamp offered here possesses every one of the physical characteristics one could hope for in a gem stamp. Flawless centering, large balanced margins, a beautiful mint bloom as fresh as the day it was printed, full intact perforations all around, and pristine never hinged gum. The fact that all of these outstanding features converge on the scarcest special delivery stamp is truly remarkable. The PSE agrees with our assessment of this stamp, assigning it the Gem 100 designation, a grade it reserves only for those scant few stamps that meet it's strict requirements of perfection. Not only is this the only never hinged #E4 to grade Gem 100, they have not even graded one 98 (the next highest grade is 95J). In fact, this is the only 19th Century special delivery stamp to reach the Gem 100 mark, whether never hinged, hinged or used. This stamp is certainly a "must have" for anyone assembling a graded set of special delivery stamps, as we doubt any other copy is deserving of such a lofty grade.

A record price is surely in store for this phenomenal stamp. Accompanied by a 2009 PSE certificate (Gem 100; SMQ $42,500.00 for a mere 98). This is the only 19th Century special delivery stamp to achieve the Gem 100 grade. (Image)
