1840 "Rainbow" Colour Trials: The first trial plate of three (May 1840) in blue-black on smaller crown watermark paper with some manuscript notation down the right side, "dipt H & H Colour" in the hand of Joshua Bacon; small surface
defect at lower right of the right hand impression, otherwise fine. The small trial sheets are the earliest and by far the rarest and most desirable of the "Rainbow" trials (S.G. Spec. DP19 (a), £110'000).
Provenance: Robson Lowe sale 1951; J. B. Seymour; Chartwell (2012).(Image 1)

1840 "Rainbow" Colour Trials: 1d part sheet of 10 impressions from the fugitive ink trials (Sept 1840) sent by Joshua Bacon to Rowland Hill, printed in red brown on white wove paper, endorsed "No 9 Plain paper", impressions 3,4,7,8,11 and
12 cancelled "712" and endorsed "Tartaric acid" "Prussic Acid" "Creosote" and "Turps" in the hand of Joshua Bacon, "A1" at upper left indicating his perceived "order of goodness"; a major line engraved rarity of which 9 sheets were used and only 5
survive in private hands.(Image 1)

1840 "Rainbow" Colour Trials: Second trial plate state 3 in blue, a part sheet of nine of the original twelve impressions on un watermarked white wove paper, dipped in Prussiate of Potash, the left vertical strip of three having
contemporarily excised possibly for further experimental reasons, the nine impressions cancelled by fine strikes of an experimental "No 712" cancellation, ink manuscript notes at top at sides in the hand of Joshua Bacon below " Prussic Acid",
"Potash", "Tartaric Acid", "Turpentine" and "Creosote", "No 2 denotes the shade of blue and D4 the order of goodness as determined by Perkins Bacon, adhesives with a few very minor imperfections as to be expected on an experimental multiple of this
size, though in no way detracting from the very fine appearance, an incredibly rare and important part sheet.
Note: On this date six Specimens in different shades of blue, numbered 1 to 6, some of these on plain paper and some with Prussiate of potash in the paper, were sent to Rowland Hill by Joshua Bacon.
Provenance: Ex Perkins Bacon Archive and Major Allen (see his article in the British Philatelist Dec 1939 item 9)(Image 1)

1840 (June) Paper, Gum and Cancellation trials: A large sheet of paper (folded for display) bearing 6 1840 1d. blacks pl. 7, trial printings on the lighter weight paper the normal weight being 30lbs per ream), annotated as "24lbs" TC and
TD, "26lbs" BC and BJ, and "28 lbs" CC and CJ in the hand of L.de Nicolas (Rowland Hills clerk), each cancelled by concentric circles cancellation, the lower three stamps of each weight with an overall brownish wash or varnish, which presumably
formed part of the trial removal, the top of the sheet bearing three gummed paper samples with "present gum", "New dark No.1" and "New light No.2" in the hand of Joshua Bacon above. A very rare and desirable trial of major philatelic importance and
major exhibition showpiece of which very few complete examples exist in private hands, cert. BPA (2010), ex Mayflower.(Image 1)
