Used with 12c Black, Plate 3 (36B), tied together by bold red grid cancel on small fresh cover to Athens, Greece, 12c additionally tied by red boxed "Aachen Franco" transit datestamp, reverse with red "New York Am. Pkt. Dec. 3" (1860) circular datestamp and faint Athens circular datestamp struck in ultramarine, neat March 9, 1861 docketing at left, magenta "19" credit below stamps, manuscript due markings front and back, small piece out of backflap and small edge tear at top

EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE USE OF THE 30-CENT 1860 ISSUE TO GREECE.

This stunning cover, from the Reverend Hill find, was sent prepaid for the 42c Prussian Closed Mail rate. Our computerized records contain just one other cover to Greece with the 30c stamp, a single on a cover from the Rev. Hill correspondence, mailed in May 1861.

Pkt circular datestamp with November date, manuscript "Per Canada" ship directive which corresponds to the sailing of that Cunarder on Nov. 9, 1864, arriving Queenstown Nov. 21, magentia manuscript "17" credit, magenta boxed "Aachen Franco" transit datestamp, blurry strike of transit backstamp which appears to be "26/11" which would further confirm carriage on the 1864 sailing of the Canada, blue manuscript due marking, 30c with minor corner crease

VERY FINE USE OF THE 30-CENT AND 10-CENT 1861 ISSUE ON COVER TO GREECE. A VERY RARE DESTINATION IN THIS PERIOD.

The cover is franked to pay the 40c rate via Prussian Closed Mail, which was established beginning in May 1863. Covers to Greece in this period are extremely rare. (Image)
