FINE USE TO AN EXTREMELY RARE DESTINATION -- THIS IS THE ONLY 1851 ISSUE COVER TO MALTA WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.
This is the only 1851 Issue cover to Malta known to us. It was treated as completely unpaid for British Open Mail. It may have been carried privately to its final destination, as the addressee was a minister and missionaries often hand-carried letters destined for other missionaries.
Ex Grunin, Piller and Craveri. With 1993 P.F. certificate (Image)

VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE USE OF THE 30-CENT 1861 ISSUE FROM CUBA TO MALTA VIA THE UNITED STATES.
Only four or five covers with this franking are known, all from the Tagliaferro & Sons correspondence. This cover, like two others from the correspondence, was franked by the sender to pay the 30c rate via French Mail. It was found to be overweight and so was sent at the 5c British Open Mail rate. The cover was treated as unpaid by Great Britain and debited 1sh8p due for the 8p transatlantic postage, 6p rate from Great Britain to Malta, and a 6p fine for the unpaid letter. (Image)
