1363 c Image24c Gray Lilac (37). Used with 1c Blue, Ty. V, and 12c Black, Plate 3 (24, 36B), deep rich colors, tied by red grid cancels on cover to Grobin, Libau, Russia (Latvia), matching "New York Am. Pkt. Aug. 11" (ca. 1860) circular datestamp on back, magenta manuscript "14" credit and blue Prussian "f" manuscript rate, red boxed "Aachen Franco" transit datestamp, 24c is partly torn away at left prior to use (barely noticeable due to placement of stamps)

VERY FINE AND ATTRACTIVE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE FRANKING TO A DESTINATION IN RUSSIA OTHER THAN ST. PETERSBURG.

The 37c rate to Russia via Prussian Closed Mail is rare, with most examples coming from the Pierce correspondence to St. Petersburg. This usage to what is now Latvia is extremely unusual.

June 6" (1862) circular datestamp with additional strike below on small black-bordered mourning cover to St. Petersburg, Russia, red "N. York Am. Pkt. Paid Jun 7" circular datestamp struck on back, red boxed "Aachen Franco" transit datestamp, blue manuscript "f" Prussian marking indicating that letter was to be carried beyond the border, receipt docketing on back confirming yeardate

EXTREMELY FINE. A SPECTACULAR FOUR-COLOR 1861 ISSUE FRANKING TO ST. PETERSBURG, RUSSIA, FROM THE PIERCE CORRESPONDENCE.

This is regarded by many to be the finest cover from the famous Pierce correspondence. It was sent at double the 37c rate by Prussian Closed Mail, sailing on the Inman Line's Kangaroo on June 7, 1862, from New York, arriving at Liverpool June 20.
