There were two panes of twenty which received the surcharge double. Examples of the double surcharge variety from Pane 1 show the doubling with horizontal misplacement to the right, while those from Pane 2 show the doubling vertically misplaced. (Image1) (Image2)

Scott 29a), from Setting A, strong color for this, particularly fresh and well centered within large balanced margins, unused, original gum, never hinged, minor perf. tones at foot, nevertheless Very Fine, a rare variety in unused condition, and, as such, of exceptional quality.

Only about ten examples are known unused.

It is believed that only two sheets of forty (i.e., 80 stamps) received the surcharge inverted.

Scott 30b), deep rich color on brilliant white paper, particularly well centered, unused with large part original gum, hinge remainders, Extremely Fine and a great rarity, of which only a handful have survived.

Less than five unused pairs are recorded with this variety, and, in addition, there is one used pair.
