124 cover image1897 (5 Feb.) neat envelope from Peking to Jaurias, France, via Shanghai (22.2) bearing Dowager 3ca. orange yellow, canceled by Peking seal in blue, matching "I.G. of Customs/Peking" double-ring origin d.s., in combination with France "Chine" 25c., canceled by "Shang-hai/Chine" c.d.s., with superb strike of "Customs/Shanghai" double-ring transit d.s. in brown on reverse, Very Fine rare and unusual usage of the Dowager 3 candarins stamp one day following the establishment of the Imperial Chinese Post.

Overseas mail during the Imperial Chinese Post Winter Overland period was normally charged 14 cents (10c. foreign postage + 4c. domestic postage for Winter Overland mail). However, since the domestic and foreign postage stamps were both applied by the sender before posting, the letter was not subject to the 14 cents rate.

During the transitional period between the Customs Post and Imperial Chinese Post, there are eighteen envelopes recorded franked with the New Currency surcharged stamps and only nine envelopes franked with the Customs unsurcharged stamps. Of these nine unsurcharged frankings, only three were carried on the southbound route, two originating in Peking and the third in Tientsin. Consequently, these three Dowager unsurcharged covers from North China represent great postal history rarities.
