148 Z image1897, Small Figures surcharges on Empress Dowager, 4c. on 4ca. rose pink, variety surcharge double (Chan 40f. Scott 31a), distinct markedly visible doubling of the surcharge throughout, bright color, well centered, on small piece, canceled by large part "Imperial Post Office/Whampoa" double-ring handstamp with "18.3.97" date inserted in manuscript, Very Fine. A rare and significant variety, especially so with this cancellation.

Of the one sheet of forty stamps (double pane) produced with this error, only twenty stamps (one pane) have a clearly visible double surcharge.

Scott 31b), two pairs reunited to form the block of four, luminous color on brilliant white paper, usual centering just to right, unused with large part original gum, hinge remainders, Very Fine and of the quintessential freshness. Among the rarest of the imperforate between varieties, further highlighted by a reconstructed multiple.

We note possibly five surviving vertical imperforate between pairs, one of which is used.

Approximately ten horizontal imperforate between pairs are known to date.

Scott 32a), pair and strip of three joined together in the form of an irregular block of five, deep color, well centered, unused with large part original gum, hinge remainder and reinforcement marks affecting some perfs., light ageing and there is a crease at lower right corner of the pair, Fine to Very Fine appearance, a rarity with two multiples (which are not from the original block) showing this variety.

Less than five unused pairs are recorded with this variety.

Scott 38a), Pane 4, position 4, with 11mm. sheet margin at right, excellent color, centered just to left, canceled by light "Customs/Shanghai" double-ring datestamp in brown, full original gum, Very Fine and a distinctive example.

Only one sheet of forty was produced with this variety, and Tony Kwan has accounted for 35 surviving examples, all of which are canceled to order by the "Customs/Shanghai" dater.
