Spann, Hampton Legion, Manassas, Va.", Very Fine, Captain Spann (1826-1864) was in Company H of the S.C. Zouave Rifles and aide de camp for Brig. Gen. R.H. Anderson. Spann died on August 21 1864 at the Battle of Globe Tavern, also known as the Second Battle of the Weldon Railroad, which cut the Weldon railroad connecting the Confederacy's last open port at Wilmington NC to Richmond where Lee's army was located. 164 cover 1 image1861, 5¢ green (Scott 1), two singles with light gum stains canceled by "JACKSON" (Mississippi) straightline postmark on faulty cover to Mrs. E.M. Clayton in Asheville N.C., probably by her husband Captain Edwin M. Clayton of the 60th NC Infantry, whose regiment was among those transferred to the Department of Mississippi & East Louisiana in May 1863, Fine appearance, this canceling device was used from late May to late July 1863 as a temporary canceling device when the May 1863 occupation resulted in the loss of the postal canceling devices. There are 26 covers recorded with this cancel, and this is the only recorded cover with a lighographed stamp. with 2008 C.S.A. certificate.

169 cover 1 image1861, 5¢ green (Scott 1), two singles in different shades, top stamp with full to large margins at left and bottom, bottom stamp faulty, both tied by a single Little Rock Ark. double circle datestamp on cover from soldier son Mariman Landrum Cooper to his father in Grandview P.O. Texas, Fine to Very Fine, only ten recorded covers franked with #1 from Little Rock are recorded by Roberts., ex-Clippert, signed Kaufmann.


Mariman and two of his brothers were members of Company A of the 18th Texas Cavalry. The 18th Texas was among the 4,791 troops captured at the battle of Arkansas Post on Jan. 9-12, 1863. Mariman died on March 17 at Fort Douglas in Chicago and one of his brothers died there 3 days later. The surviving prisoners were exchanged on April 29, and were assigned to the Army of Tennessee, and the last brother died during the battle of Atlanta in August 1864.

Haislip), Jan. 16th 1862 docketing at left, small faults, Fine appearance, this stamp was first issued Oct. 16 1861 and Bowling Green was occupied by Union forces on Feb. 14, 1862, meaning this stamp was used in Bowling Green for a mere 121 days. W. Persons, Camp Defiance near Savannah Ga. Feb. 14th 1862 Present term of enlistment as Lt. Col. in state army expires in May & wishes to raise a Battalion or Regt. Enough of my men will reenlist to make at least a Battalion. Get me authority to raise a Batt. Or Regt. I was for four years at a military school." and one with "William D. Harden Savannah 23rd Aug. (1861) Having been appointed in the Ordinance Office, he wishes to receive an appointment in the C.S.A.", and a cover with "Savannah Ga. Jun. 7 1861 Paid" circular datestamp and "10" handstamp to Stephens with manuscript "John E. Wood Savannah Ga. June 6th 1861 suggests the appointment of Mr. Nicholl as District Judge since W.R.
