Everything the specialist could want, presented on neatly annotated Scott album pages; mint and used examples range from Sardinia #10-11 through Italy #34, with Sardinia double-headed #11, and 12, 13 & 15 privately perforated; Italy originals and reprints, fake cancels, town cancels, identified types (often multiple), essays, 1863 unadopted design proofs/essays from Ronchi and Grazioli, unused #22a (2), 22b, 23a and 23 printers' waste (printed on one side only and on both),etc.; Raybaudi certificates for mint #34 (2003) and 34b (2002); the true strength of this collection, though, is its postal history: over 100 covers, fronts and folded letters showing various usages and markings, including railway, company, red "New York/Paid All", border (Austrian and French) and PD marks, numeral cancels, c.d.s.'s, Austrian cancels used on Italy post-1866, three scarce 1866 Military cancels, five 3-color frankings, multiple mixed frankings—all showing the communication across the young country, from Genoa to Potenza, generally Fine to Very Fine with much better, including the majority of the covers, break out the Peroni to celebrate winning this lot—and raise your glass to founder Francesco, whose 1863 letter to a David Winkler in Ulm, ordering spelt (and signed by the man himself), is included.
