576 /o/   imageItalian States: Papal/Roman States, the Maximus Collection, 1852-71. say your prayers before bidding—this is a lot unlike any other: singles, pairs, a few blocks, covers, fronts, folded letters, varieties, shades, cancels—all a Romaphile could want and more; we find pairs, strips and gutter pairs off- and on-cover; a page of 1 Baj plate deterioration examples, 3 Baj and 6 Baj plate flaws (hungry for a "francopollo"?), an unused #4 gutter block of six, oily prints of 3 Baj as a single and on cover, and a full sheet of 100 of #3var (Sassone #3A), previously folded between the panes and including the three major constant varieties at positions 14, 69 and 87; postal usages include bisects of #2 (on folded letter and with normal on cover), 7a (on piece) and 8 (on piece), a trisected #4 var (on piece); various origins and routes (with better city cancels), sanitized/fumigated, a pre-cancel usage, and three covers post-Unification; this is a magnificent collection, but don't just take our word for it: scattered throughout are nearly 50 certificates: 40 from Sismondo, 3 from Biondi, and one each from Chiavarello, Enzo Diena, Raybaudi and Sorani, Fine to Very Fine with much better, at last—the Eternal City answers the Eternal Question: "What have the Romans ever done for us?".
