1874 (Aug 13) stampless American cover to the ship's doctor on "USS Swatara/Hobart Town" and endorsed at lower-left "Care of US
Consul/at Hobart/Town" with fine 'NEW YORK PO/AUG/13' cds (no year, as usual), rated "18" (cents) & 'LONDON/PAID/29AU74' transit all in red, very fine 'HOBART TOWN/OC17/74/ TASMANIA' arrival cds, minor blemishes but very attractive with all markings
on the face. A very unusual naval/consular cover to what was at the time a very scarce destination. Launched in May 1874, the first voyage of 'Swatara' was a scientific expedition to the South Pacific to observe the Transit of Venus. Several teams
