1525 long cover image1942 (Jan 16) with Commonwealth of Australia Department of Defence imprint, to "Commander in Chief/Home Forces/Army Headquarters/Victoria Barracks/Melbourne" with Pictorials ½d (McCracken Printing) & 4d plus 1939 Airmails 1/- tied by 'PORT MORESBY' cds, red & black/white R label, light vertical fold not affecting the stamps or markings. The rate was domestic letter rate 2d per oz x2 + 3d per ½oz airmail surcharge x3 + 3d registration + ½d War Tax (introduced on 1.10.1941). Civil administration of Papua was suspended on 14.2.1942, the area being placed under military control following the Japanese attacks on Rabaul & Lae in January 1942. Items from Papua paying the War Tax are therefore very scarce.

1526 long cover image1942 (Feb 11) to England with Pictorials 1d 2d & 3d tied by 'DARU/PAPUA' cds, red & black/white R label alongside, censored locally with very fine complete strike of 'PASSED BY CENSOR/[initials] ... Asst. Censor' cachet (the latest known date of any Papuan censor handstamp) Cairns 20FE42, Townsville 21FEB42 & Brisbane 24FE42 transit backstamps & superb Brisbane censor cachet, minor faults. The rate was Empire letter rate 2d + registration 3d + ½d War Tax; the ½d over-payment possibly because ½d stamps had been exhausted at Daru. Civil administration of Papua was suspended on 14.2.1942. This must be one of the last items sent from Daru before all civilian post offices were closed. According to John Little, the boxed censor handstamps were used only at Port Moresby and Samarai: this item strongly suggests such an implement was also used at Daru.
