1932 (June 15) large parcel piece (160x118mm) with typed "OHMS" at top, to "Harrison W Smith/ Papeari, Tahiti/Society Islands" with
extraordinary & rare mixed punctured 'OS' franking of Monocolours 2d 6d & 1/- plus Bicolours 2/6d SG 054 (minor marks) tied by 'PORT MORESBY' cds, a couple of light bends & the 6d & 1/- with corner faults. Harrison Willard Smith was an American
physics professor at MIT & heir to an oil fortune who founded the exotic plants gardens in Papeete, which is still a major tourist attraction today. A rare franking to a remarkable destination.
The Bicolours punctured 'OS' are particularly scarce on cover. They were not issued until 1930, and were replaced by 'OS' Overprints from mid-1931. As far as we are aware, this is the only known usage of a Bicolours Punctured 'OS' 2/6d on a postal
article.
