1938 (Oct 28) to USA endorsed "Via Australia New Guinea Air Mail" with Undated Birds 'AIR/MAIL' Overprints 5d tied by very fine
'MADANG' cds, 'SALAMAUA/28OCT38' transit backstamp, taxed locally with 'T/["2d"]' square boxed handstamp, on arrival 'U.S. CHARGE/TO COLLECT/4 CENTS' cachet and USA Postage Dues 2c pre-cancelled pair affixed on face. The rate was 3d foreign letter
plus 3d per ½oz airmail surcharge, so 1d underpaid. Another very attractive example of part-air accelerated mail.

1939 (March 27) underpaid airmail to Australia with Undated Birds 1d 2d & 5d tied by 'BULOLO' cds, manuscript "Tax 10d",
'SALAMAUA/29MAR39' transit backstamp, on arrival Australia Postage Dues 3d pair & 4d affixed on face tied by 'GPO SYDNEY/-3AP39' cds, minor blemishes. The rate was 2d per 1oz domestic letter plus 3d per ½oz airmail surcharge, so the item apparently
weighed just over 1oz and should have been paid 2d x2 + 3d x3 = 1/1d with double the 5d underpayment charged.

1939 (Oct 2) from the Solomon Islands with KGVI Pictorials 1½d Canoes tied by slightly untidy 'GIZO' cds to "Rev C Luxton/Methodist
Mission/Skotolan/Buka Passage/Mandated Territory of New Guinea", censored on arrival with plain-paper resealing label "OPENED BY CENSOR" manuscript in red ink tied by 'SUB DISTRICT OFFICE/6.OCT.1939/BUKA PASSAGE' double-ring cds endorsed "Passed by
Censor" and initialled "RF" [Raleigh Farlow, District Officer] in red ink, small part of the label removed on opening & minor blemishes.
This is the only recorded example of the Buka Passage Sub-District Office marking (PPNG Calling May 2023). Roger Lee states that it is also the only known example of such provisional censorship (unlisted by Little who records three typed provisional
labels only: see previous Lot). The item is stated to have been sent by Mrs Luxton from the Methodist Mission Hospital at Vella Lavella and carried by the SS 'Malaita'.

1942 (Jan 2) social airmail cover to New Zealand with Bulolo Airs ½d & Undated Birds 5d (both with small faults) tied by 'BULOLO' cds,
plain white censor label (Little NGL3) tied by 'PASSED BY/CENSOR/T.N.G. 50 ___' cachet in violet (Little NGH3b; recorded 8.11.1941 to 8.1.1942 only), 'WANGANUI/13JA42/NZ' arrival cds on face, light vertical fold. Little records two items only with
plain white censor labels, noting both seen are tied by the 'Passed by Censor/T.N.G. No.16' cachet (so this is not one of those he records). The rate was 2d British Empire letter plus 3d airmail surcharge plus ½d War Tax (introduced 10.12.41). Items
from New Guinea paying War Tax are very scarce: mail services were suspended a month after its impostion. Most overseas airmails were exempt from War Tax; New Zealand was a specific exception and the War Tax applied.
