are very scarce; it sounds like Mr Macdonald did almost everything except serving as Postmaster & Judge!

with 'Norddeutscher Lloyd' Art Nouveau 'Ships' label (minor faults), registered to Germany with Undated Birds 3d x2 & 5d and 'AIR MAIL' overprints 1d tied by faint 'KIETA' cds with largely very fine strike of 'R/KIETA/No....' cachet on face, minor
blemishes. The foreign letter rate was 3d for the first 1oz + 2d per additional 1oz x3 + 3d registration fee.

1935 (Jan) Nord Deutscher Lloyd Bremen German shipping line envelope to Australia posted on board ship with Undated Birds 2d tied by
very fine 'M.S. NEPTUN' ship's cachet in violet and again by 'LOOSE SHIP LETTER/25JA35/SYDNEY' cds (Hosking #1503; rated C) where off-loaded, a few minor blemishes & slightly trimmed at top. The NDL Sydney-New Guinea-Hong Kong route commenced in 1934
with the 'Neptun' & 'Merkur', but was short-lived, both ships being sold to the Burns Philp Line in 1935. Renamed 'Neptuna', she was sunk in Darwin Harbour in 1942 during the Japanese air raids on Northerm Australia.

1936 (April 20) commercial cover (195x138mm) airmail to "Illustrated London News" England endorsed "By New Guinea and Australia
Singapore London Air Mail" with Undated Birds 'AIR/MAIL' Overprints ½d x2, 1½d, 5d, 1/- x2 and 5/- brown (the only example we have seen on commercial cover) tied by 'POST OFFICE/SALAMAUA' cds, Sydney transit backstamp, very minor edge faults not
affecting the stamps. The rate was 1/6d per ½oz airmail letter x5 = 7/6d, so 1½d overpaid (presumably an arithmetical error).

Birds 'AIR/MAIL' Overprints 1d & 3½d tied by two light strikes of 'WAU' cds. The rate was 3d foreign letter plus 1½d per ½oz Goldfields airmail surcharge for carriage by Guinea Airways from Wau to Port Moresby. A very attractive example of part-air
accelerated mail.

1938 (April 2) usage of Chile 'Punta Arenas' postcard to New Guinea with Pinto 1p tied by 'MAG[ALLENES]/ RECEPTION' cds, another
stamp fallen off with New York 'POSTAGE STAMP/REMOVED/BEFORE RECEIPT/AT THE/N.Y.P.O.FOR.SEC.' boxed cachet in its place, missent to Yugoslavia where 'Liasse de lettres' [Sheaf of Letters] label affixed with 'LJUBLJANA/-8.V.38' cds and directions to
forward via "Alexandria & Port Said", 'RABAUL/13JL38' cds arrival ties the label then re-directed to Sydney, some transmission marks as to be expected. Phew! Even without the mis-direction, this would have been one of the longest journeys possible.
[Punta Arenas, the capital of Chile's most southern region, was renamed Magallenes in 1927 but reverted to the original name in 1938]
