POSTAL HISTORY: 1898 (April 20) cover to New York with 'REGISTERED' single-line h/s at upper left and Palm Trees 1d green strip of 4 (one with corner damaged apparently before being affixed) & Flag 5d red tied by 'APIA/SAMOA' double-ring cds, USA 8c Sherman affixed on face tied by San Francisco cancel where 3-line registration h/s in violet also applied, very fine New York '... BRANCH P.O/STATION/Y ...' boxed arrival on reverse, minor blemishes. The Samoan stamps paid for carriage to San Francisco only; the US stamp paid the 3c domestic letter rate plus 5c registration fee to New York.

POSTAL MARKINGS: Manuscript "AHA" on Large Canoes ½d 1d (defective) & 2d, the first two with Brisbane transit cds of JA3/1908. [Believed to be the initials of Australian missionary Rev AH Abbott, who worked in the Solomons between 1904 & 1920. In 1906, he moved to Nongisila, and that may be the origin of these stamps] (3 items)

POSTAL MARKINGS: Manuscript "AHA/22-12-07" neatly inscribed centrally on Large Canoes ½d 1d 2d & 2½d reconstructed on piece & tied to each other by Brisbane cds of JA3/08: Franks #126. The initials are of the Reverend AH Abbott, an Australian missionary in the Solomons 1904-1920. In 1906, he moved to Nongisila, and that may be the origin of this item. 1935 (Jan 3) airmail cover to Australia with 10o & 50o x2 tied by Stockholm cds, German 'BERLIN-SASSNITZ (HAFEN)/BAHNPOST/ZUG14 4/1/35' oval backstamp, minor blemishes. Per Imperial Airways/QANTAS service IE303 during which Sylvanus force-landed at Mirabella on 9.1.1935; Arethusa was delayed at Jodhpur due to engine trouble 12.1.1935; and most significantly Athena force-landed on a beach at Point Stuart 100 kms from Darwin. Sanford #350116: "No mail is known in collectors' hands".

Per Imperial Airways/QANTAS service IE393 during which 'Arethusa' was delayed at Hua Hin (Siam): the mail was carried by train to Bangkok and transferred to 'Sydney'.

1943 (Nov 25) oversize cover (355x250mm) airmail to Australia with Palace 5kr x5 & Swans 20kr x5 + low values tied by Stockholm cds, censored with British labels, London 'OAT' large oval cachet in red & 'CARD PLACED IN BOX/DATE/14MAR1944' arrival d/s on face, most stamps with faults of varying degrees, some creases & edge faults. The letter rate was 6kr50 for between 620 & 640g + 1kr per 5g airmail surcharge x128. This is the highest recorded pre-1945 airmail franking to Australia

1939 (March 3) registered airmail to Australia endorsed "5gr v Chiasso" with 10c & 120c tied by 'LOCARNO' cds, red & black/white R label, Brindisi transit of 4.3.1939 & Sydney arrival b/s of 14.3.1939, light central fold & minor blemishes. Per Imperial Airways/QANTAS flying boat service SE95 during which Carpentaria was damaged by a Chinese junk on 9.3.1939 while moored at Bangkok and the mail had to be transferred to Canopus to complete the service.

1939 (Nov 28) to Queensland with 'g("5")/uber-via/("Chiasso 2")' cachet and Airmail 1fr solo tied by Geneva cds, Brisbane '12DEC/1939' arrival b/s and early 'OPENED BY CENSOR' label with single line of text & 'PASSED BY/CENSOR 3' cachet on face, light central fold & partly-repaired faults. Carried on Imperial Airways/QANTAS flying boat service SE199 during which Corio suffered tail damage at Tiberias, Palestine on 4.12.1939 and the mail had to be transferred to Coogee to complete the service.

[Ranong, on the Kra Isthmus, is Thailand's least-populous province. Tin-dredging occurred on the Ngao River]
