793 c imagePOSTAL HISTORY: 1898 (April 20) cover to New York with 'REGISTERED' single-line h/s at upper left and Palm Trees 1d green strip of 4 (one with corner damaged apparently before being affixed) & Flag 5d red tied by 'APIA/SAMOA' double-ring cds, USA 8c Sherman affixed on face tied by San Francisco cancel where 3-line registration h/s in violet also applied, very fine New York '... BRANCH P.O/STATION/Y ...'  boxed arrival on reverse, minor blemishes. The Samoan stamps paid for carriage to San Francisco only; the US stamp paid the 3c domestic letter rate plus 5c registration fee to New York.

[Believed to be the initials of Australian missionary Rev AH Abbott, who worked in the Solomons between 1904 & 1920. The initials are of the Reverend AH Abbott, an Australian missionary in the Solomons 1904-1920. In 1906, he moved to Nongisila, and that may be the origin of this item.
