The Pacific Union Express Co. operated in Nevada and California between July 1, 1868 and December 1, 1869, when they sold out to Wells Fargo & Co. The Golconda office continued to use the stock of Pacific Union Express franked envelopes.

In 1868, Golconda, located on a prominent emigrant trail, had become an ore shipping station for the new Central Pacific Railroad whose tracks reached Winnemucca September 16, 1868. This cover of "Dec 8" was one of the earliest carried by Wells Fargo from Golconda.
