Mar 16" cds with manuscript date; slightly reduced at right a bit into frank, F.-V.F. and attractive, one of only four known examples of this ornate Feather River express frank.

This express operated over a route established as early as 1850 from Marysville to the mining camps along the Feather River. This usage posted at the Strawberry Valley post office is unique.

Manuscript frank with "Feby 13/67" date on uncanceled 1864, 3¢ pink entire addressed to capitalist James Whartenby in Nevada City, with printed "South Yuba Canal Co., Nevada City, Cal." return corner card at left, likely originating from the North San Juan area, Very Fine, a very rare Wells Express usage from one of a family of expresses that where run by L.H. Wells of Wells' North San Juan & Humbug Express.

James Whartenby (1817-1890), was a Nevada City miner who acquired great wealth during his years as general manager and president of the South Yuba Canal Water Company.
