Sharp strike of red oval rating handstamp on gray folded letter datelined "Boston April 19th 1847" to Philadelphia Pa., carried by either the "Oregon" or "Knickerbocker" west from Stonington to New York on Route 801; light file fold and edge wear, Very Fine.

ONE OF ONLY NINE RECORDED "STEAMER 10" USAGES ON THE STONINGTON-NEW YORK WESTWARD SAILING.

The route agent's "Steamer 10" rating handstamp is not known with the Oregon suffix. The census of 10¢ covers on this route reveals the rarity of this marking on covers going west from Stonington to New York.

Illustrated Opticians ad cover from New York N.Y. to Kingston, Jamaica, reverse with label "This article of Mail matter has been recovered from the wreck of the S.S. The Atlas steamer "Ailsa" of Glasgow was due to leave New York on 29th February for Jamaica and Port Limon. She was anchored in the harbor when the steamer La Bourgogne came into collision with her in a dense fog, cutting her almost halfway through. The mails were subsequently salvaged.

The Territorial Governor appointed Beverly Chew the New Orleans postmaster pro tempore on Feb 4th, 1804. This would presumably be the earliest possible date a cover might show a "New Orleans" cancel and be rated using the United States rate schedule.
