Between 1836 and 1863, six steamboats bearing the name "Sultana" were enrolled on Western Waters. This "Sultana" is the third of 527 tons built at Jeffersonville in 1843 and was at the time of her launch the largest steamboat of her day.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE STEAMER "UNCLE SAM" STENCIL STRAIGHTLINE MARKING.

The "Uncle Sam" was built in 1849 and dismantled in 1859.

We record only three examples of the "Uncle Sam" straightline stencil marking:
1. 1851 Dec. 4, St. Louis Mo. to New Orleans La., uncancelled 3¢ #10A, the cover offered here.
2. Jan. 21, cover from Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., 5¢ 1847 stamp doesn't belong, ex-Feldman.
3. 1852, folded letter to Saint Louis Mo. bearing 3¢ 1851 issue tied by stencil and "Steam" marking, ex Klein-Somdal.

In June 1850, Wallis & Hogan were awarded the contract for the Vicksburg to Yazoo City Route 5714 at $1,495 per annum for a three times a week service. The "William A. Violett" of 152 tons was built at Elizabeth Pa. in 1848 with four owners of whom her Master, Capt. Samuel Gwartney was one.
