1794 Letter From "Le Comite De Salut Public" (Committee of Public
Safety), printed form with the Committee's letterhead ("Bureau de la Fabrication Extraordinaire des Armes") and a hand-written message signed by (Lazare) "Carnot" and "C.A. Prieur" (Claude-Antoine Prieur-Duvernois) as members of the
committee, address panel with partial strike of straight-line cancel and wax seal of the committee, some aging and bit of erosion at upper left corner of the letter not affecting signatures, Very Fine document mailed during Robespierre's "Reign of
Terror," the two signers served on the 3rd and 4th committees (September 1793 to November 1794).rnThe Committee of Public Safety, an emergency body set up in France in April 1793, was the first effective executive government of the Revolutionary
period and governed France during the most critical year of the Revolution. Its members were chiefly drawn from the Jacobins and it contained some of the ablest men in France, dominated at first by Danton and then by Robespierre. It successfully
defeated France's external enemies but was largely responsible for the Reign of Terror, and its ruthless methods, at a time of growing economic distress, led to increasing opposition. In March 1794 an attempt to overthrow it, led by Hébert, was
quashed, but four months later the reaction which overthrew Robespierre marked the end of the Committee's power. It was restricted to foreign affairs until its influence was finally ended in October 1795.rnLazare Nicolas Marguerite, Count Carnot was
a French statesman, general, military engineer, and administrator in successive governments of the French Revolution. As a leading member of the Committee for General Defense, the Committee of Public Safety and of the Directory, he helped mobilize
the Revolutionary armed forces and matériel.rnClaude-Antoine Prieur-Duvernoi was a French military engineer and member of the Committee of Public Safety. He organized the manufacture and requisitioning of the weapons and munitions that were needed
by the French for war with the European powers. (Image 1)
