50533   imagePre-Adhesive & Stampless. 1642ca. Civil war entire to Viscount Mandeville in London from Walter Strickland, parliamentary agent in Holland. Strickland was sent to Holland by the Long Parliament in 1642 as their agent to the States-General of the United provinces to complain of the assistance given by the Prince of Orange to Charles I. Upon return in 1650 he was elected to the third (1651) and fifth (1652) councils of state. When Cromwell expelled the Long Parliament, Strickland was one of four civilians which sat on the council of thirteen, he was also a member of the little parliament and the two councils of state that it appointed. He was in both councils of state during the protectorate and was made Captain of the grey coated foot guards (Cromwell's bodyguards), in 1657 the Protector summoned him to the House of Lords. A superb historical piece from a man who played such an integral role in one of the most turbulent periods of British history.(Image 1) (Image 2)
