1859: 1 s. blue, perf. 12 and 1860/63 1 d. bright green on thin glazed (Bordeaux) paper,
perf. 12, a used horizontal pair on registered 1860 entire letter locally mailed within Geelong, cancelled by three bold strikes of "2" obliterators in black with "REGISTERED / GEELONG" cds (May 25) at left in red - the earliest recorded day of use
of the 1 d. bright green. The entire with some file folds not affecting the delightful appearance. Cert. Perry (2006).rnrnNote: The reason for the unusual local registration can be found in the contents - the sender James Cowie, a future member of
the Parliament of Victoria and a prominent local businessman, was being sued by the addressee, Alexander Sayers, and the letter was sent registered to provide proof of delivery. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

Emblems 1860/63: 2 d. bluish slate, a single and a horizontal pair used on 1862 mourning
cover to the Museum of Natural History in Paris endorsed "per Great Britain" left uncancelled and tied in transit by London "50" numeral obliterators in black. On arrival in London struck with erroneous "INSUFFICIENTLY / PREPAID" in black and this
deleted by "50" obliterator in red and circular 'PD' applied. Calais transit cds also ties on 2 d. adhesive. Reverse with Liverpool / Ship boxed datestamp (April 8) in black. Not recorded in the Ben Palmer census. A scarce and most appealing cover.

on cover to Dublin, Ireland endorsed "Per Northam" and "Via Marseilles" in manuscript, tied by "R.M.S.S. / V / HOBSONS BAY" duplexes (Dec 26). A fine example of this scarce cancellation - in 1861 a service was introduced allowing mail posted late for
the English Mail to be delivered to the ship whilst still at anchor. No Late Fee was charged on this cover. A most attractive and extremely rare usage.rnrnProvenance: Harmers, London, 13 March 1996, lot 1280.rn Collection Roy

1863/74: Octagonal 1 s. deep blue on blued on Saunders paper, a sheet marginal example used
on 1871 cover endorsed "via Trieste" to Basel, Switzerland, the endorsement corrected to "via Brindisi", tied by barred numeral "10" of Warrnambool in black. Framed "INSUFFICIENTLY PAID / VIA BRINDISI" in black due to a second stamp, probably a 3 d.
adhesive, being lost in transit, possibly before reaching Melbourne where the marking was applied. 'London / Paid' transit (April 21) in red and backstamped at Warrnambool (Feb 25), Melbourne (Feb 28) and in Basel. Illustrated and discussed in the
Ben Palmer census on page 181. A fine and most unusual cover.rnrnProvenance: RL, London, 13 Sept 1977, ex lot 177.rn Phila Covers (Allan Levy) sale 16, Melbourne, 19 July 1985, lot 38.rn Collection Rod Perry,

have been correctly franked via Brindisi at this date. The previous owner of the cover believed that a second stamp, probably a 3 d. adhesive was lost in transit, possibly before reaching Melbourne where the due marking was applied. However there is
no evidence as to where the 3 d. adhesive was placed unless applied over the selvedge at right. This describer believes the cover was correctly franked for the Trieste rate for a ¼ ounce letter and whilst the endorsement was altered, no further
stamps were applied for the Brindisi increment. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)

duplex in black (April 15). The envelope with fine oval cachet of "J. MAULTBY / HERO" with Ship vignette struck in violet. Cork arrival cds (June 9) on reverse. Echuca is on the Murray River and the "Hero", built in 1874 by George Linklater, was
first captained by J. Maultby. The paddle-steamer was still employed on the river in 1957 when she caught fire and sank. Raised in 1988, she has been fully restored and still operates from Echuca. A rare and unusual cover.rnrnProvenance: Prestige,
