James Baines" to London (Black Ball Line), tied by "2 / V" oval obliterators in black. Manuscript credit '5d.' in red alongside "AUSTRALIAN / PACKET / PAID / LIVERPOOL" cds (March 6, 1856) in red. Reverse with Geelong despatch (Nov 24) and Melbourne transit. The "James Baines" carried 200 passengers and over 80'000 ounces of gold on this journey. Endorsed "Registered and Paid" at lower left and reverse with Maryborough datestamp (July 27) and Melbourne arrival of the following day. The letter is a request by the Hospital at Maryborough for reimbursement of costs for medical care from the estate of the late John Farmer. A most unusual combination usage. Cert. 40316 imageRecess by Perkins Bacon 1856: 'Queen on Throne' 1 d. yellow-green, wmk. Star, a superb large margined example with part strike of the CANCELLED obliterator in black, position 3 on the horizontal block of six. Of these six, two have never been found (positions 1 and 6), position 4 is housed in the collection of His Majesty King Charles III and position 5 is in the Vickery collection at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, this being therefore one of just two examples in private hands.
