6647 image1895/96: De La Rue Imperforate photographic composite Essay for 2½ a. value, with uncoloured flags above the central vignette and without the fancy border, on card (90 x 115 mm.) lettered "A" at top and dated "Nov 18th 95" in ink, pencil manuscript "Copper plate". This submitted Essay was turned down on March 12, 1896 in favour of the stamps as issued (Essays marked 'AA' and 'BB' in the De La Rue files. A similar Essay marked 'Dupl.' at base is illustrated in "The De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton RDP., on page 6560. 6653 image1900/01: De La Rue Appendix sheet dated at top in manuscript "Jany 11, 1901" with imperforate Colour Trial for the 1901 1 a. value in carmine, the Flags at top handpainted in red, with pencil notations on reverse relating to the colour change for the 1 a. to be red instead of indigo to meet UPU requirements (the change also involved the 4½ a. to be blue.black instead of orange to avoid confusion with the 1899 1 a. indigo).
