strike of a London forwarding agent. Arrived New York. This is the only recorded “Paid in China” cover from Hong Kong to New York via London. No rate markings in London or New York. Unique.

 1856 Hong Kong (14 Dec) to Augustine Heard & Co., USA. Entire letter, sent “via Marseilles” and rated “74” and “84”, applied with Hong Kong double arc cds on reverse. Transit London (29 Jan). Arrived Boston (16 Feb). This
mail was carried by P&O Norna, Alma and Valetta. Between Jan 1855 and Dec 1856, P&O reduced its service due to Crimean War. Also, French transit rate was reduced since 1 Jan 1857 and it is probably the earliest example of the new rate.
1856.12.14 香港寄美國瓊記洋行。郵簡，寫有“via Marseilles”、郵資“74”及“84”，鈐香港雙弧日戳。1.29經倫敦。2.16抵波士頓。 此信先後經鐵行輪船公司Norna、Alma及Valetta號送遞。在1855年1月至1856年12月間，鐵行輪船公司因克里米亞戰爭而縮班。 而此信同時亦可能是採用1857年1月1日生效的法國中轉郵資之最早例子。(Image 1)

Kong (21 Mar). Scarce latest example from Straits Settlement to Hong Kong via Calcutta-Hong Kong line, not mention the last voyage of P&O Shanghae on this line. The only trip in 1857 and the only one to/from Straits Settlement.
1857.3.10 新加坡寄香港瓊記洋行。郵簡，寫有“Per Shanghai”及“4”郵資，貼印度維多利亞女皇像1安娜橫三連，銷B172殺手戳。背面鈐新加坡郵局日戳。3.21抵香港。自海峽殖地寄香港，並採用加爾各答-香港航線的珍罕最晚例子，經鐵行輪船公司Shanghae號於該線的最後一程送遞。亦是加爾各答-香港航線中唯一一程1857年航程及經海峽殖民地的一程。(Image 1)

Hong Kong. This mail was carried by Cunard America to Liverpool, Austrian Lloyd Line from Trieste to Alexdria, P&O Pengal from Suez to Galle and P&O Pekin to Hong Kong. One of the five mails to China via this route as well as one of the three

 1857 USA (22 Jul) to Hong Kong. Entire letter, sent “Per Arago Via Marseilles & Overland Mail”, rated “1/-” and “21” (5c US inland + 16c to UK), applied with New York cds. Transit London (6 Aug). Arrived Hong Kong (19 Sep).
Not included in the seven examples of partially paid 21c mails recorded by Michael Lauence. As Pearl River was blocked by Royal Navy on 7 Aug, this mail was probably carried by gunboat from Hong Kong to Whampoa. Ex- Stollnitz, LC SCamp.
1857.7.22 美國寄香港。郵簡，寫有“Per Arago Via Marseilles & Overland Mail”、郵簡“1/-”及“21”（5分美國國內 + 16分至英國），鈐紐約始發日戳。8.6經倫敦。 9.19抵香港。不列於Michael Lauence的記錄中，七件預付部分郵資21分的信件中。由於珠江在8月7日被英國海軍封鎖，故此信應是由炮艇從香港送至黃埔。(Image 1)
