VERY FINE. ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED ENTIRES OF THE 1876 3-CENT RED ON WHITE CENTENNIAL WITH DOUBLE LINE UNDER "POSTAGE". ONE OF THE MOST EASILY RECOGNIZED AND DESIRABLE OF ALL POSTAL STATIONERY RARITIES.
The 1876 Centennial Exhibition envelopes were the first commemorative envelopes issued. From a single master die, working dies were produced with a single line under "Postage" (Die 71, called Hartford Die) and with a double line under "Postage" (Die 72, called Philadelphia Die). Die 72 comes in two sub-types and the printing in Red (Ty. 2) is one of the great rarities of postal stationery collecting, with only four full entires recorded.
Ex Meurer. With 2000 P.F. certificate not mentioning any soiling. UPSS value $80,000.00. (Image)
