A strong mainly mint collection of Azores on very well-filled old Scott pages, with excellent classics and comprehensive later issues. Highlights include the 1868 imperfs all with large margins all round inc. 20r bister unused signed (#3), 50r green mint signed three times (#4), 80r orange and 100r lilac both used (#5/6), then the first perf issues inc. 1868/70 series to 50r green used (#7/11) plus 120r blue used (#14) and 240r violet mint (#15), 1871/75 inc. 120r blue mint (#29), followed by the 1875/80 series with 50r blue (#34), 150r yellow signed (#36) and 300r violet (#37) all mint (10r greens reprint and genuine with tear not counted), plus a superb used 150r blue with s.o.n. cds cancel (#35). Then follows the 1882/85 small 'Acores' overprints almost complete including the 500r and 1000r red o/ps unused/mint (#59/60), plus the 500r red violet with black o/p perf 131/2 mint (#64a), leading on to Prince Henry the navigator complete, top values used (#65/77), St. Anthony series complete mint (#78/92) with the 1000r top value signed Dr. Diena, then everything else complete too, including Ceres with the good 2.40e green (#232), 3e pink (#233), 10e pink (#236) and 20e turquoise (#237) all mint. A great old-fashioned collection, please note this man's collection of Madeira is a separate lot in this auction.
Wonderful collection, mostly mint, on old-fashioned Scott album pages with no empty spaces. The first page is particularly impressive, filled with classics, starting with the imperfs of 1868, all four margins, with 20r bister unused signed, 50r green mint signed, 80 orange mint and used with the mint signed, then 100r lilac unused and used both signed three times. Next are the 1868/70s complete except the 80r reprint, with the 1870 240r violet mint, though with expertisation mark that shows through slightly, mentioned for accuracy's sake only (#15), leading on to the 1871/80 series also complete with 1876 150r blue mint signed (#29), 1879 150r yellow superb used signed (#30) and the seldom seen 1874 240r violet also used (#31), etc. An excellent old-time collection, with remarkably few faults and abounding with signatures on the scarce issues. Please note this man's collection of Azores is a separate lot in this auction.
A substantial accumulation of 1000s of stamps on album pages and in old glassine envelopes with surprisingly good material to be found. There are interesting studies among the collections, particularly on postmarks. An example is a one-volume collection starting off with a scarce pre-philatelic cover postmarked 'ILHAS' in blue sent to the mainland, then a survey of fancy cancels and a good range of 'paquebot' markings, followed by bisects of Ponta Delgada on newspaper pieces with cancels of 24th, 25th and 26th November 1894, plus excellent collateral material with a complete list of towns and parishes in the Azores, detailed maps of the islands and literature on postmarks. Some of the better material seen on the album pages and other collections includes 1868 imperfs with four margins 20r bister used, signed (#3), 50r green used with enormous margins, 1868/70 10r, 20r, 100r and 120r unused presumed reprints nevertheless collectible, 50r green mint (#11), etc. Then 1871/75 inc. 120r blue used (#29), 1875/80 with 10r blue green (#31), 50r blue (#35) and lots of 300r violets mint and used, leading on to the 1882/85 small 'Acores' o/ps with 10r green embossed Luiz, 15r lilac brown and 20r bister each unused and used (#45, #47/48), 20r carmine mint and used and 100r lilac used x2 (#49, #54), etc. Then follows the Prince Henry the Navigator series with two complete series used (#65/77), St. Anthony of Padua inc. 300r used (#90), Vasco da Gama complete used, etc, through the 1910s with plenty of useful mint never hinged, extensive Ceres to 20e turquoise mint (minute pinhole only visible from the back), as well as lots of back of the book including parcel posts complete mint, etc. The rest of the holding forms a loose mass of material in the box, clearly chaotic, yet there are good organised pockets with further town postmarks including superb box cancels on stockcards, classic imperfs of Portugal with neat numeral cancels, covers, postcards and postal stationery, old packets of large and small 'Acores' o/ps of the 1860s through 1880s inc. imperf 50r green and 80r orange x2 used all with sidewalk margins, perf 120r blue used (#14), then in another packet no less than three of the small o/ps on 80r orange used (#53a) and this good shade comes up again several times in a crowded book of postmarks organised by the towns and villages. Clearly a challenging lot, requiring a lot of work representing material that this collector never got round to processing, as intended. This will prove extremely rewarding when gone through properly.
,Comprehensive collection of many hundreds of mint and used stamps, virtually all one of a kind, housed in a large specialised Schaubek album replete from the classics onwards. The collection begins with Moldavia bulls with the 1858 27p #1 used on laid paper, in all probability a sophisticated forgery - it looks that good - and valued as an excellent reference copy damaged left hand corner, followed by 1859 40pa blue Moldavia bull mint (#9), 1862/64 eagle and bull first issues of Moldavia-Walachia inc. laid paper 3pa orange mint (#11), 6pa carmine mint (#12), laid paper 3pa yellow used signed twice, 1865 Cuza issues, a good range of 1866/67 Prince Carol issues inc. 5pa shades mint (#30/30a), different papers distinguished inc. 2pa and 20pa on thick paper (#29a, #32a), etc. Then 1868/70 Carols complete used (#33/36), 1872 50b blue and red imperf used, signed (#49), 1872 perf issues complete used with an extra 25b dark brown with blue cancel, signed (#50/52), 1872/79 'Romania' issues with Paris and Bucharest printings complete used, then with no empty spaces through to 1900. The 20th century includes all the early pictorial series, with 1903 post office commems complete superb used (#166/172a) inc. the 2L orange error (#171a) and distinct shades on the 5L top value with the gray lilac signed, the 1906 general exhibition series complete used (#196/206), 1906 semi-postals complete used (#B1/B16), inverted o/ps on the WWI issues with the 25b on 1b invert signed (#240), through better mint series of the 1930s inc. 1931 kingdom anniversary (#384/388), army centenary (#389/395), navy anniversary (#396/399), 1932 medicine congress (#417/419), 1932 scouts semi-postals complete mint (#B31/B36), etc, etc. There is also an extensive working part of the collection with an additional volume containing several hundred 19th century issues, highly specialised, an organised treasure trove of watermarks/without watermarks, perfs, shades, superb cds and colored postmarks, mint and used mulitples, etc. as well as further Moldavia-Walachia classics, 19th century revenues, early 20th century mint never hinged series, etc, etc. A leather bound copy of the rare 'Timbres du Royaume de Roumanie' by Georges Brunel accompanies with reproductions of the sheets including the tete-beche rows of the May 1862 and the March 1863 issues. A great opportunity for the Romania specialist, please inspect carefully.

The collection is completely uncataloged but will no doubt be very substantial, without considering material that is simply not in the catalogs. Much more here than described, a substantial collection.

A most worthwhile holding, invaluable to the specialist particularly for the ,19th ,century.
