The Kilbourne Collection of CSA Stamps and Postal History continued...

Patriotics–Handstamped Paid and Due Markings continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description
568 c ImageCarolina City N.C. Paid Dec. 9 (1861). Clear strike of crude integral-rate circular datestamp with small letters on cover to Argyle N.C. with red and blue 7-Star Confederate Flag with "Southern Rights" Banner Patriotic design (F7-9), negligible stain at bottom

VERY FINE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS "SOUTHERN RIGHTS" PATRIOTIC FLAG DESIGN AND UNUSUAL USED FROM A POST OFFICE OTHER THAN WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA, WHERE IT WAS PUBLISHED.

Although the concept of States' Rights is referred to in verses on Patriotic covers, this is the only flag design which incorporates the words "Southern Rights." It was published by T. S. Whitaker of Wilmington N.C., who also published Confederate songs, including "The Stonewall Quickstep" by John H. Hewitt.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS 9-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL CIVIL WAR PATRIOTIC DESIGNS.

The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag designs (7 thru 13 stars). Surviving examples are rare.

FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THIS LARGE FORMAT 9-STAR CONFEDERATE FLAG. ONE OF THE MOST ELUSIVE OF THE FEW RECORDED 9-STAR PATRIOTIC DESIGNS.

The ninth star represents the admission of Arkansas, which was followed only three days later by North Carolina. Due to the short time period there were fewer 9-Star Confederate Patriotic designs produced than any other flag designs (7 thru 13 stars). Surviving examples are rare and are normally found with the F9-2 design. This design, with the large style flag, tassels and "Lawrence Rifles" unit designation (F9-3) is on a similar order of rarity to the other listed 9-Star design (F9-1). (Image)

578 c ImageTudor Hall Va. Nov. 21 1861. La. Volunteers at top, minor overall toning and slightly reduced at right
