Tuskegee Ala., Oct. 30, 1861. Bold strike of blue double-circle datestamp with matching "PAID" in oval and "5" handstamps on red, blue and black "Our Homes" and "Protection" Pictorial Confederate Patriotic cover (MS-3) to Americus Ga., remarkable detailed allegorical scene of Confederate soldier defending family and country at top with full horn of plenty, and Northerner at bottom with "taxation" and slave with U.S. flag and bag and empty horn of plenty, slight age staining and small reduction at right

VERY FINE. ONE OF ONLY TWO KNOWN USED EXAMPLES OF THIS FASCINATING AND ELABORATELY DESIGNED PICTORIAL PATRIOTIC COVER.

The only other recorded used example of this design was part of the Dr. Brandon collection and was last sold in 2014 for $20,000 hammer (Siegel Sale 1087, lot 109).

Marshall Tex. Jul. 25 (1861). Circular datestamp with "PAID" and "10" handstamps on "Hanging Lincoln" Cartoon cover (MS-4) to Mr. N. B. Sexton in Wytheville Va., answer docketing of Aug. 6, 1861, slightly reduced at right, some faint edge toning

VERY FINE. ONLY TWELVE EXAMPLES OF THE CELEBRATED HANGING LINCOLN ENVELOPE ARE RECORDED. THIS IS THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE AND THE ONLY EXAMPLE MAILED FROM TEXAS. AN OUTSTANDING AND HISTORIC CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC.

The Hanging Lincoln design is widely recognized as the most distinctive of all Civil War patriotics. In this extraordinary cartoon, President Lincoln is hanging upside down from a tree limb, with his symbolic axe and fence rail tied around his neck. The caption reads "Abe Lincoln the destroyer. He once split Rails. Now he has split the Union." To the left and right is the caption "The penalty of disregarding the constitution. Impeached, deposed, Tried and convicted" (there is a spelling correction from "diposed" to "deposed"). Standing beside Lincoln is a mustachioed Winfield Scott, labeled "Old Fuss n Feathers", dropping his sword and exclaiming "My glory is gone for ever." On the ground is the Union flag, captioned "The stars and stripes lie in the dust, Never to rise." A star at left has the caption "The southern star is rising" and the Confederate 11-star flag towers above with the caption "The stars and bars shall for ever wave triumphant." Along the bottom is the imprint "Copyright claimed. HM & WC Box 417 Nashville Tenn." Despite continuing investigation, we have been unable to uncover the identity of the publishers "HM & WC."

There are twelve genuine Hanging Lincoln patriotics (listed in date order): 1) Jul. 25, 1861, Marshall Tex. "Paid X", ex Hall (Siegel Sale 840, lot 27); 4) Nov. 2, 1861, Bowling Green Ky., ex Dr. Green, Schwartz (Siegel Sale 981, lot 4154); 5) Jan. 1, 1862, Nashville Ten., 5c Olive Green (Siegel Sale 933, lot 978); 6) Jan. 4, 1862, Nashville Ten., 5c Olive Green; 7) Feb. 20, 1862, Cumberland Gap Ten., manuscript Paid 5, ex Boshwit (Siegel Sale 940, lot 462); 8) Apr. 15, 1862, Cartersville Miss., manuscript Due 5, ex Dr. Brandon (Siegel Sale 1087, lot 10); 9) Apr. 15, 1862, Camden Miss., 10c Rose, to Mrs. Mary Burns, Oso Tex., offered as lot 709 in this sale; 10) Jun. 24, 1862, Camden Miss., 10c Rose, to Mrs. Mary Burns, Oso Tex., same correspondence as No. 9 (Siegel Sale 1063, lot 2208); 11) date unknown to West Union S.C., manuscript Due 5; and 12) privately carried and not postally used. San Antonio Tex. Nov. 23. Circular datestamp with "Paid 10" handstamp on cover with brown Allegorical Child Seated on Globe, Holding 11-Star Confederate Flag and "Abolition" Snake, with "The Sunny South Our Country" Slogan Patriotic design, addressed to Maj. Newton, 3rd Regiment Texas Volunteer Infantry, General Waterhouse's Brigade, General Forney's Division, Army of Arkansas, "Via Shreveport La.", cover has been professionally restored around edges and backflaps rejoined

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED USED EXAMPLE OF THIS FASCINATING DESIGN, WHICH WAS ADAPTED FOR BOTH SIDES OF THE WAR. AN IMPORTANT CIVIL WAR POSTAL HISTORY ARTIFACT.

The "Sunny South" design was modified to express pro-Union sentiment on envelopes sold in the North. This cover is accompanied by a second blue cover with "San Antonio Tex. Nov. 7" circular datestamp struck on back, the same "Paid/10" in arc handstamp on the front, and precisely the same address as on the Patriotic. Both covers come from an original correspondence that surfaced in the 1980's and were purchased by the Kilbournes privately from John and Patricia Kaufmann. This is the first appearance at auction for this remarkable cover.

Mostly clear strike of integral-rate circular datestamp on buff cover to Fredericksburg Va. with green "Confederate States of America" Allegorical River Scene and Verse Patriotic design (MS-2, Verse 8), addressed to Mr. Jas. H. Hewitt, Company F, 3rd Regiment, N.C. State Troops, accompanied by original green lettersheet with matching River Scene, letter has interesting content describing local soldiers, skirmishes and the general exuberance that existed in the Confederacy at the end of 1861, including "Capt. Moores Artillery has had 2 fights since they have been in South Carolina, they have sunk 2 of old Abes vessels and one was a gun boat at that, Hurrah for the Southern Confederacy.", cover with couple small sealed tears and slightly reduced at right

VERY FINE. THIS ALLEGORICAL RIVER SCENE IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC DESIGNS. THE MATCHING GREEN ON GREEN LETTERSHEET, WITH GOOD WAR CONTENT, MAKES THIS A HIGHLY EXHIBITABLE PAIR.

The verse on this design is particularly fervent, with a very questionable sentiment. It reads, "Death to each marauding band, who would defile this glorious land-- The white and black man's Dixie! For e'en our slaves would take a hand To drive the foe from Dixie!" (Image)
