Pindoadunkhan FE 18/73 transit in black with partial strike in green 'PESHAWUR CITY (REC'G) HOUSE/ FE 15. Lowe illustrates a similar strike from Kurrachee which is a Railway cancel and mentions use at Peshawar and Aurangabad. (RL Asia, p.517 (34)). Cover apparently traveled to the Afghan Post Office in Peshawar with only Afghan postage. No indication of postage due except for indistinct black triangle which appears to show the word 'Pay'. Interesting cover which needs research.

2863   imageAfghanistan, 1873 (Feb. 27), small native cover from Bhera to Peshawar, franked with 1 Shahi dated 1290 (1873), Plate VI, position. 11. (Scott 10, SG 12) with oily reddish cancel and tear cancel. Bhera, Jhelum, Rawalpindi transits and Peshawar receiver all on one side. Traces of barred cancel shows where Indian stamp has been removed. Cover with small tears, faults, some reinforced by Scotch tape which has caused several tape stains. Still, a scarce cover.

2864   imageAfghanistan, 1874, small cover from Kabul to Tashkurghan, with enclosure franked with cut to shape 1 Shahi dated 1290 (1874), Plate VII D, position. 12, tied sabre and tear cancels. On the address side, is notation, 'Postage paid Kabul City' plus mystical sabre and cross and '691' safe passage invocation. Beneath the stamp is the 'tikat Kabul' notation, signed Holcombe with his notes, and with 1987 Dietrich photo certificate.

Kabul sabre cancel and tear cancel. Beneath the stamp is manuscript 'tikat Kabul' confirming Kabul origin. On address side is sabre and cross with mystical number '691' repeated for safe passage (part of left numeral torn away when cover was opened), 1987 Dietrich photo certificate.

W. Cameron, passed by J. Brownlow, Lt. Col. Commanding 72nd Highrs. The 72nd (Duke of Albany's Own) were part of the Kurram Valley Field Force at Fort Kurram and were involved in the First Campaign in Afghanistan.

After a British victory at Fatehabad on April 2, 1879, Lieutenant General Sir Samuel Browne's forces occupied Gandamak, and Yakub Khan decided to negotiate with the British. As known the main British negotiator was Major Cavagnari, who was eventually appointed British Envoy to Kabul, where he was massacred on September 3, 1879, and an atrocity that sparked the renewal of hostilities.

The Treaty of Gandamak signed in May 1879, officially ended the first phase of the Second Anglo-Afghan War. As a consequence the Peshawar Valley Field Force withdrew from Gandamak through Khyber to Peshawar in June. However on September 30, 1879, the British Envoy Major Cavagnari and his escort arrived at Kabul, where they were massacred, and causing a second phase of the Second Afghan War.

Long double page letter describing delays in marching, other news, viz. '…I have been given the appt. as adj't of the Behar Mounted Volunteers and have accepted it on condition that if the Reg't is ordered on active service I may be permitted to rejoin at once…I heard from (Gen'l. Massy) the other day - they are now in sight of Cabul & will I hope give a good acct of the wretches who murdered poor Cavagnari…' The British Resident in Kabul, Sir Louis Cavagnari and his escort, had been massacred on Sept. 3 inside the Residency after an 8 hour siege by mutinous Afghan troops.
