2406 c image1947 linen parcel-tag endorsed "LETTER/POST" to Sydney with rare franking of Ball Bay 1½d emerald, 6d purple-brown & 1/- grey-green tied by the new 'NORFOLK ISLAND/14OC47/AUST' cds, blue/white R label with 'NEW SOUTH WALES' crossed-through, 'LINDFIELD' arrival backstamp of 16OC47 proves carriage by air. The surface rate was 2d per ounce x6 + ½d war tax + 6d registration = 1/6½d so with a convenience overpayment of ½d. A marvellous item, in the first few months of local postal administration, and the only such item we have seen from Norfolk Island. [Jean Fombertaux was a French émigré who studied architecture in Sydney & graduated in 1947. His self-designed home, Fombertaux House, is still standing, on Sydney's North Shore. The addressee is probably his mother]

Roger Lee states that postal facilities were transferred from the Tamata mining village to Ioma in mid-1905, the cds continuiing in use at the new office.  (2)

Plus a contemporary photograph of Rev Gill with a group of young natives. The Duvira Mission was located at the mouth of the Mamba River at Manau, arout 100kms due north of Kokoda. The letter took almost two weeks to reach Ioma - a little over half-way - and probably close to a month to get to him.  (2 items)

2415 c image1934 (Feb 24) from passenger on board "SS Lurline/Matson Line" (return address) to Wisconsin endorsed "Via Air Mail" with rare commercial combination franking of Pictorials 3d Dandy and USA Winged Globe 8c olive both tied by 'PORT MORESBY' cds, the USA stamp also cancelled in transit by 'SAN FRANCISCO/APR 6/CALIF/1934' duplex, light vertical fold clear of the adhesives otherwise very fine. Roger Lee states that this is the only known non-philatelic example of such a combination franking from Papua. Between 1924 & 1937 a system for pre-paying US domestic airmail with either or both Australian or American stamps was introduced in Australia and its Territories. American dealers GH Pflum and AC Roessler created philatelic covers from both New Guinea & Papua.

The Duvira Mission was some 500kms north-west of Samarai, and the telegram was presumably delivered by ship. The novelty is captured by Rev Gill's pencil annotation on the reverse "The Radiogram as it arrived here resplendent in official glory" (!).

Spectacular. The rate was 5/10d per ½oz for airmail carriage by TEAL to New Zealand and Pan-Am Trans-Pacific & Trans-Atlantic Clipper to England x3 + 3d registration = 17/9d.
