Regulations for redirecting mail required that the item be re-sent from the office of delivery, West Kensington: compare with Lot 727. It was clearly re-posted at Paddington so 1d local postage should have been affixed. Illustrated at page 87.

727 PSE imageMULTIPLE EMBOSSINGS: ½d+½d+½d+½d+½d all in orange SO27.2 (rated RR) to England with Hobart duplex of JY5/1898,  'WEST KENSINGTON W/AU8/98/ 1 ' arrival backstamp, redirected with West Kensington squared-circle of the same date & 'FARNHAMAU9/98' arrival backstamp, light toning on the reverse in no way detracts from the facial appearance. An impressive little item, of which only three examples (all of different size or stock) are recorded used and of which this is the only commercial usage. Illustrated at page 93. This item clearly demonstrates that the multiple embossings were applied from right to left, with the fifth impression being placed below the other four and also at the right: see also Lots 723 & 724.

Stated to be the only recorded example. 'The Clipper' was a labour-orientated journal 1893-1909.

734 PSE imageGRAND LODGE OF TASMANIA: 1d deep rose with the embossing unusually low SO5.14 (rated RR; unrecorded unused) mourning envelope to "Beaconsfield" with 'HOBART/SP24/03/P-R' (Pillar Receiver) cds, the reverse with Launceston transit of the same day & Beaconsfield arrival. Stated to be the only recorded example. With the enclosed matching notepaper on De La Rue watermarked paper with a printed summons to attend the next meeting. The Grand Lodge was formed in 1890 by seven English, five Scottish and seven Irish Lodges. They would have had some interesting meetings, especially in 1916.

735 PSE imageGRANGE, THE: ½d pale orange-yellow with embossed 'THE GRANGE/HOBART' in blue on the flap SO3.7 (rated RR; unrecorded unused), endorsed "Card only" at upper-left & sent unsealed to "Miss Thea Basher/The Grange" with 'HOBART'-in-Bars cancel & cds of MR15/1899 on the reverse. ½d was the newspaper rate, so it should have been taxed. Illustrated on page 72. [The Grange is an historic home at Campbell Town 120km almost due north of Hobart. Designed by the convict architect, James Blackburn, it was built in 1847 for Dr William Valentine and abuts Valentine Park]

738 PSE imageHOBART COFFEE PALACE: 1d red as SO5.11 (rated RR; unrecorded used) but on buff, 2d green/buff and emerald/grey-green SO7.2 (RR) each with 'HOBART COFFEE PALACE/CO/LIMITED' crest on the flap, each with two small oily stains on the reverse only, unused. Stated to be the only recorded examples. In the 1880s & 1890s, the Temperance Movement built numerous residential hotels where no alcohol was served. In Australia these often elaborate buildings were usually referred to as 'coffee palaces'.  (3)

739 PSE imageHOBART SAVINGS BANK: 1d scarlet with 'Savings Bank Packet Only/.../HOBART SAVINGS BANK' at upper-left & embossed seal in blue on the flap SO5.25 (rated R) larger size (177x125mm), to "Valleyfield/New Norfolk" with 'R'-in-oval & chamfered-boxed 'REGISTERED/No/2014' cachet in red, 'NEW NORFOLK' arrival backstamp, repaired flap tear and minor discolouration still unusually fine for these items. The Packet Rate was 1d. Registration for sending passbooks was free!, making this a very significant postal history item. [Valleyfield was a hops farm west of New Norfolk]
