3357 imageAUSTRALIA - NEW SOUTH WALES: mid-1850s illustrated lettersheets by Frederick Terry each with the imprints 'Terry del 1853' & the printers 'Sands & Kenny Sydney & Melbourne' and comprising 'Court House and Scotch Church, Paramatta'; 'Double Bay from South Head Road'; 'Entrance to Sydney Harbour, North Head seen from the Flagstaff'; 'Fruit Market, Sydney'; 'Government House from the Botanical Gardens'; 'Newcastle from the Nobby'; 'North Head from Vaucluse'; 'Paramatta River from Fort Phillip'; 'Sydney Cove from Fort Macquarie', hand-tinted; 'Sydney from Old Point Piper Road'; 'Sydney Harbour from Watson's Bay' (hand-tinted); 'Sydney, Garden Island, Pinchgut &c from Point Piper'; 'The Nobbies from Newcastle'; 'Windsor Church'; printed from steel plates, the odd mostly minor blemish but nine of the group are graded A or A-, unused. The watercolourist & engraver Frederick Casemero Terry was born in England, trained in Switzerland & arrived in Sydney by early-1852 where his oeuvre was largely scenes of Sydney & surrounding areas. He established a reputation as one of the most accomplished artists in the Colony.  (14) (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5) (Image6) (Image7) (Image8) (Image9) (Image10) (Image11) (Image12) (Image13) (Image14) (Image15) (Image16) (Image17) (Image18) (Image19) (Image20) (Image21) (Image22) (Image23) (Image24) (Image25) (Image26) (Image27)

3358 imageAUSTRALIA - NEW SOUTH WALES: c.1854 usage under cover of illustrated lettersheet 'ST JAMES CHURCH SYDNEY' with imprint 'C Ashton Sc' at L/R on thick 4to blue paper, 4pp fully written & being part of a longer missive, ink-blotch affects the right-hand side of the illustration & a few other minor blemishes still quite fine for these. The letter, from an American, is full of animated and largely positive social commentary, & states "...The Anniversary of the Founding of the Colony was an important time...equivalent to the 4th of July at home...Sydney [has] all sorts of people..." The heritage-listed St James' Church, in King Street, was consecrated in February 1824 by the infamous Rev Samuel Marsden. Designed by the convict architect, Francis Greenway, and erected by convict labour, it has been called by art historian Daniel Cruickshank, "one of the world's 80 greatest man-made treasures". It is the oldest-surviving church in Sydney. Charles Ashton was an engraver active in Sydney between 1844 & 1869. This appears to be a little-known image. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3)

3360 imageAUSTRALIA - VICTORIA: Letter headed "Tarradale Augst 28th/1856" and signed "Thomas Ham/late 45 Swanston Street" who speaks of "...heavy pecuniary loss...risked my life in travelling through the diggings during the night...since I have retired from Engraving and Land Agency I have been engaged in Quartz Crushing..." He also complains about non-delivery of his mail, adding "...I am quite certain no blame can possibly lie with Mr Martin our postmaster here", tape stain below Ham's signature & a few minor blemishes. An intriguing document. Thomas Ham was the designer of the first Victorian postage stamps & engraved early Victorian banknotes. He later sought his fortune on the Taradale Diggings, then worked for the Victorian Geological Survey Office. In 1860, he went to Brisbane as Government Lithographer, where he produced further stamps for Queensland. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4)
