Bold cds on 1864 3¢ pink entire to Sacramento, with a Pacific Union Express red ribbon printed frank, additional blue "Sac., Mess, Jan 13" cds canceling; opening tear at upper left corner and partial backflap, otherwise Extremely Fine, the only cover known and in wonderful condition, pictured in Nathan (pg. 239), ex Jarrett. Estimate  $4,000 - 6,000. Wingate's Oakland Express ran in opposition to Bamber for the San Francisco - Alameda County business and were in associated with Pacific Union. When Pacific Union closed in 1870 they were left without a partner and closed. Due to the rarity of this express they were obviously not very successful in opposing Bamber. (Image1)

1942   image1876 Centennial Envelopes. Lot of original Postal circular describing the Centennial envelopes, six mint entires (four green & two red), two blue Entire bundle wrappers with gold monogram, one used green entire postmarked "Philadelphia/May 22" (1876, very early use) with original enclosure which states in part, How do like my envelope? It is Centennial made in the U.S. Building. They have a machine there that cuts, folds, counts and puts the "stickem" stuff on at the rate of 120 per minute, plus one unused green entire with pencil inscription, Centennial Exposition (Phila. 1876) I saw the first Typewriting machine. the factory (Remington) had a number of young girls on a long counter receiving dictation from the public (50 cents per letter of 6-10 lines) and I dictated and mailed such a novelty of a letter to my old mother. In the Govt. building near by, envelopes were printed & stamped on it like this. I bought some & kept this one ever since. As you are interested in Postage Stamps I thought I send you this one. If it is no good for collections as it has not been cancelled by Post Office mark, just destroy it., dated "July 2, 1913", Very Fine, an interesting group for the Postal Historian, ex-G. Turner.
